Johnson (knee) suffered a season-ending torn ACL in Sunday's win over the Buccaneers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Johnson sustained the injury on kick coverage to begin the second half of Sunday's 35-7 win over the Buccaneers. The torn ACL is a tough blow for Johnson, who failed to make the team out of camp while dealing a rib injury before spending most of the 2022 season on the practice squad after appearing in 30 games for the 49ers over the previous two seasons. His 2022 campaign will now end with just two games played and no stats recorded. He'll now focus on getting healthy and returning at some point during the 2023 campaign.... See More ... See Less

49ers' Dontae Johnson: Suffers knee injury
Johnson didn't return to Sunday's game against the Buccaneers due to a knee injury, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Johnson was shaken up on kick coverage to begin the third quarter, and he was unable to return during the second half. Whether he'll be available Thursday against Seattle remains to be seen.... 49ers' Dontae Johnson: Back with Niners
The 49ers elevated Johnson (rib) from the practice squad Saturday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Johnson had been nursing an injury at the time the 49ers released him at the conclusion of the preseason in late August, but his addition to the team's practice squad shortly thereafter implied that the rib issue wasn't a major concern. Now that he's been elevated to the roster for the first time in 2022, he could get the chance to make his season debut Sunday in Atlanta while the 49ers' cornerback depth has been tested due to the season-ending knee injury Emmanuel Moseley suffered Week 5 against Carolina. The 49ers are also without another key corner in Jason Verrett (knee), who remains on the PUP list and will miss his sixth straight game to begin the season.... See More ... See Less -
Dontae Johnson: Let go by Niners
The 49ers released Johnson (ribs) on Tuesday. Johnson has been dealing with a rib injury since the 49ers' preseason opener in mid-August. However, he's a candidate to be re-signed Wednesday since Jimmie Ward (hamstring) is expected to be placed on injured reserve, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Dontae Johnson: Sticking with 49ers
Johnson signed a one-year contract with San Francisco on Thursday. Johnson appeared in 16 games for the 49ers last year and logged 30 tackles (20 solo), two pass defenses, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. He should compete for playing time at cornerback once again prior to the 2022 campaign.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Dontae Johnson: Enters COVID protocols
Johnson was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday, as a result of testing positive for the virus, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Johnson has mostly contributed on special teams this season, a role he'll look to return to in Week 18 against the Rams. That is, if he can clear COVID protocols in time.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Dontae Johnson: Re-signs with San Francisco
Johnson (foot) signed a contract with the 49ers on Wednesday. Johnson was cut loose by the 49ers ahead of Tuesday's roster deadline but quickly re-signed with the team. He should fill a depth role in the secondary while also seeing time on special teams.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Dontae Johnson: Nursing foot soreness
Johnson exited Monday's practice with foot soreness, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. The specifics of the injury remain unclear, but it appears he'll be out of practice for at least a couple days. Johnson had just under two weeks to get healthy before the preseason opener Aug. 14 versus the Chiefs.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Dontae Johnson: Inks new deal with Niners
Johnson re-signed with San Francisco on Friday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. GM John Lynch has made a point of retaining veteran infrastructure in the 49ers' defensive backfield, re-signing cornerbacks Johnson, Jason Verrett and Emmanuel Moseley this week. San Francisco's secondary -- and entire defense, for that matter -- was ravaged by injury in 2020. Johnson provides reliable depth, having made 14 appearances last year while surrendering just one passing TD over 28 coverage targets. The team may further bolster the secondary in April's draft, perhaps with a selection as high as No. 12 overall.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Dontae Johnson: Set to sit Week 6
Johnson (groin) has been ruled out for Sunday's game versus the Rams, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Johnson started at cornerback in Weeks 3 and 4 before suffering this groin injury. The 49ers' secondary is quite banged up, as Richard Sherman (calf) and K'Waun Williams (knee) are on IR while Emmanuel Moseley (concussion) is considered questionable. If Moseley is also ruled out, Ahkello Witherspoon and Jason Verrett are expected to start while Jamar Taylor rotates in at slot corner.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Dontae Johnson: Ruled out against Dolphins
Johnson (groin) won't play in Sunday's game versus the Dolphins, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The 49ers' secondary is in rough shape heading into Week 5, as Emmanuel Moseley (concussion) has also been ruled out and Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring) is questionable. Jason Verrett and Ken Webster are on track to start at cornerback if Witherspoon is unable to go.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Dontae Johnson: Plays through injury
Johnson picked up a groin injury during the team's Week 4 oss to the Eagles but played through it, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. Johnson gutted out the injury as the 49ers were out of other options at cornerback. With Richard Sherman (calf) eligible to return from injured reserve, the team could have reinforcements on the way in the secondary. That leaves Johnson's status both on the active roster and from an injury perspective in limbo for a Week 5 matchup against the Dolphins.... See More ... See Less -
Dontae Johnson: Cut by Niners
Johnson was cut by the 49ers on Saturday. Johnson will hope to latch on with another team, as he has accrued 73 games of NFL experience since being drafted by the 49ers with a fourth-round selection in 2014.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Dontae Johnson: Staying in San Francisco
Johnson has re-signed with the 49ers on a one-year contract. Johnson was a fourth-round pick by the 49ers in 2014 and stayed with the the team through 2017. He spent time with several franchises the next two seasons before returning to San Francisco in 2019. The veteran is primarily a special teams contributor, while also providing some depth at cornerback.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Dontae Johnson: Splits nine games across two teams
Johnson finished with three tackles through nine regular season games between the Chargers and 49ers in 2019. Johnson began the year with the Chargers before being released then signed by the team that drafted him in 2014. The 28-year-old saw limited action, serving as corner depth during his brief stint with both clubs. Johnson will look for a new start as an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason.... Dontae Johnson: Released by 49ers
Johnson was waived by the 49ers on Monday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. Johnson's return to San Francisco has come to an end after logging just three tackles over 111 combined snaps on defense and special teams. The team's 2014 fourth-rounder will now be subject to waivers.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Dontae Johnson: Lands in San Francisco

Dontae Johnson: Let go by Chargers
The Chargers released Johnson on Saturday. Johnson was good for secondary depth while Michael Davis (hamstring) was out, but Davis is healthy now and the team needed roster spots for Melvin Gordon's activation and wideout depth. He's a solid candidate to land with another squad as a depth asset.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Dontae Johnson: Signs with Arizona
The Cardinals signed Johnson on Tuesday, Kyle Odegard of the Cardinals' official site reports. In search of reliable cornerbacks, the Cardinals added Johnson to their roster in hopes of solidifying the position. Johnson started 16 games for the 49ers in 2017 and finished with a team-high 76 tackles. He will likely back up David Amerson, though he could quickly see more playing time if Amerson struggles.... Seahawks' Dontae Johnson: Questionable for Sunday's game
Johnson (hip) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Broncos, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports. Johnson has yet to practice this week, but with the Seahawks lacking reliable options in their secondary, they will hope that the 26-year-old cornerback can still go Sunday. If Johnson is ultimately forced to sit out, Neiko Thorpe figures to see an expanded role on the back end of Seattle's defense.... See More ... See Less
