  • Jake Luton: Joins New Orleans' practice squad

The Saints signed Luton to their practice squad Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports. Luton appeared in two preseason games with Jacksonville, totaling 186 yards and one interception, and was waived ahead of the 53-man roster deadline. Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton are cemented as the top two quarterbacks in New Orleans, so Luton will operate as an emergency option on the practice squad.

  • Jake Luton: Waived by Jacksonville again

The Jaguars waived Luton on Monday. Luton was waived by the Jaguars last week but returned to the team Tuesday. However, he once again finds himself on waivers after the team claimed Jake Verity off waivers from the Colts. Luton appeared in two preseason games with Jacksonville and completed 22 of 38 passes for 186 yards and one interception.

  • Jaguars' Jake Luton: Returns to Jacksonville

The Jaguars signed Luton on Tuesday, James Palmer of NFL Network reports. Luton was waived by Jacksonville a week ago, but he'll return to the squad ahead of the team's final preseason contest. The 2020 sixth-round pick appeared in each of the Jaguars' first two exhibition contests and completed 22 of 38 passes for 186 yards and one interception. In a corresponding move, the team waived Ryan Santoso.

  • Jake Luton: Waived by Jacksonville

Luton was waived by the Jaguars on Monday. Luton appeared in each of Jacksonville's first two preseason games, completing 22 of 38 passes for 186 yards and one interception. The 2020 sixth-round pick was expected to compete for the top backup spot behind Trevor Lawrence, but he's been let go during the first wave of cuts ahead of Tuesday's 85-man roster deadline.

  • Jaguars' Jake Luton: Reunites with Jags

Jacksonville signed Luton to a reserve/future contract Friday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports. Luton, who joined the NFL as a 2020 sixth-round pick of the Jaguars, most recently spent time on Miami's practice squad. Now, the 25-year-old signal-caller can prepare to spend the offseason continuing his development in a familiar situation.

  • Jake Luton: Reverted to practice squad

Luton was moved back to the Seahawks' practice squad Tuesday, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports. The quarterback has been elevated to the active roster two consecutive weeks to serve as the backup to Geno Smith, but now he will have to be signed to the 53 man roster if he is asked to backup again. Russell Wilson (finger) is nearing a return but can't be activated until Nov. 14, so Luton or the recently signed Jacob Eason could serve as the second option at QB for the Seahawks in Week 8 versus the Jaguars.

  • Seahawks' Jake Luton: Slots in as backup

Luton was elevated to the active roster Saturday. With Russell Wilson (finger) sidelined indefinitely, Geno Smith will take over as the starter with Luton slated to act as his backup. A sixth-round pick in 2020, the 25-year-old started three games for the Jaguars last season, posting a woeful 624 yards (5.7 YPA), two touchdowns and six interceptions across 110 attempts.

  • Jaguars' Jake Luton: Appears in three games

Luton completed 60 of 110 passes for 624 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions while recording one carry for a 13-yard touchdown in three games this season. The rookie sixth-round pick received a surprising opportunity to start after Gardner Minshew went down with an injury, but he failed to take advantage of the three-game opportunity. Luton and Minshew are the only quarterbacks under contract for next season with Mike Glennon hitting free agency, but Jacksonville is poised to select a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick during the 2021 NFL Draft. Luton figures to be fighting for a roster spot in training camp.

  • Jaguars' Jake Luton: Turbulent outing against Steelers

Luton completed 16 of 37 attempts for 151 passing yards, throwing no touchdowns and four interceptions during Sunday's 27-3 loss to Pittsburgh. He also fumbled but recovered the loose ball himself. In what may have been a predictable outcome in a matchup against Pittsburgh's vaunted defense, the rookie signal-caller was a turnover machine during his third career start. He was capable of keeping the Jaguars competitive against the Texans and Packers over his first two appearances Weeks 9 and 10, losing by a combined six points, but Sunday he was overwhelmed by the Steelers. After putting in a week of limited practices before ultimately being deemed inactive, Gardner Minshew (thumb) may be ready to retake the starting reigns next Sunday against the Browns.

  • Jaguars' Jake Luton: Making third straight start

Coach Doug Marrone confirmed Monday that Luton will receive a third straight start at quarterback Week 11 versus the Steelers, Hays Carlyon of 1010 AM WJXL Jacksonville reports. After missing the Jaguars' past two games, Gardner Minshew (thumb) is listed as questionable for Sunday's contest, but John Shipley of SI.com relays that the signal-caller was only able to throw on a limited basis this week. As such, Minshew doesn't look as though he'll be anything more than an emergency backup if active Week 11, giving Luton at least one more opportunity to potentially stake his claim to a permanent starting role. Luton surpassed 300 passing yards in his NFL debut Week 9 in a loss to Houston, but he struggled to navigate windy conditions in Green Bay in Week 10, completing only 18 of 35 attempts for 169 yards, a touchdown and an interception. A matchup with a tough Pittsburgh defense isn't an ideal spot for Luton to post dramatically better numbers Week 11.

  • Jaguars' Jake Luton: Keeps team competitive at Lambeau

Luton completed 18 of 35 pass attempts for 169 yards, one touchdown and one interception during Sunday's 24-20 loss to Green Bay. Luton absorbed three sacks during the Week 10 defeat while committing a giveaway for a second straight outing, but he again proved capable of keeping the Jaguars competitive in a matchup against a Pro Bowl caliber quarterback. Last Sunday against Deshaun Watson and the Texans, Luton and Jacksonville fell by only two points. On the road in Green Bay, the rookie had his team ahead by three in the fourth quarter. The sixth-round draft choice moves to 0-2 as a starter, though there may be a case for him to keep his job once Gardner Minshew (thumb) returns from injury. Minshew had dropped his past six starts before suffering the injury, with Jacksonville losing by double digits in four of those outings. Next up for the Jaguars is a home game against the vaunted Pittsburgh defense.

  • Jaguars' Jake Luton: Expected to make another start

Coach Doug Marrone said Monday that Luton is likely to start Sunday's game in Green Bay, John Oehser of the Jaguars' official site reports. Luton impressed in his NFL debut against the Texans on Sunday, though the contest resulted in a 27-25 loss. The rookie sixth-round pick completed 26 of 38 pass attempts for 304 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while also bolstering his fantasy output with a 13-yard rushing score. With Gardner Minshew (thumb) trending in the wrong direction for Week 10, it looks like Luton will get another chance to prove himself under center, albeit against a Packers secondary that's proved much stingier than Houston's.

  • Jaguars' Jake Luton: Likely starter for Week 9

Luton will take starter reps in practice this week, paving the way for him to get the nod over Mike Glennon with Gardner Minshew (thumb) ruled out for Sunday's game against Houston, John Oehser of the Jaguars' official site reports. Starting Luton makes sense for the 1-6 Jaguars, who can see what they have in the rookie sixth-rounder rather than trot out Glennon, who has established himself as a subpar option under center over 22 NFL starts. Minshew has been playing through a fractured thumb, so there's a chance his recovery extends beyond this week and allows Luton to make multiple starts if the rookie proves himself capable. Luton threw for 2,714 yards with a tidy 28:3 TD:INT in 11 games as a senior at Oregon State.
