Riley McCarron: Moves to practice squad injured list
The Patriots placed McCarron (undisclosed) on the practice squad injured list, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
After playing in the Patriots' season opener, McCarron was released and later signed to the team's practice squad. In order to make room on its practice squad for wideout Jace Billingsley, New England moved McCarron to the practice squad/injured reserve list, though his injury is still unknown.

Patriots' Riley McCarron: Sees 15 snaps in opener
McCarron logged 15 out of a possible 75 snaps on offense in Sunday's 27-20 win over the Texans.
McCarron did not haul in his only target and muffed a punt in the fourth quarter, which marked his biggest impact in the game. McCarron should have a chance to bounce back in the next few games while Julian Edelman completes his suspension, but he's off the fantasy radar as long as his role in the Patriots offense is minimal.

Riley McCarron: Waived by Patriots
The Patriots have waived McCarron, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
The team also waived Chad Hansen on Monday, though we suspect that McCarron will land on the Patriots' practice squad if he goes unclaimed on waivers. With Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett and Cordarrelle Patterson the only receivers the team currently has available, it's possible that the Patriots will add veteran depth in short order. With that in mind, Dez Bryant, the biggest unsigned name out there, has mentioned his interest in playing for New England.

Patriots' Riley McCarron: Promoted to active roster
McCarron has been added to the Patriots' active roster, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
With Duke Dawson (hamstring) having been placed on IR, the Patriots filled the resulting roster spot by promoting McCarron from their practice squad. He'll give the Patriots added depth at the wide receiver position, with Julian Edelman set to serve a four-game suspension to start the season. While not an immediate fantasy option, McCarron could conceivably carve out some sleeper value if he ends up absorbing a share of the team's work in the slot.

McCarron has landed on the Patriots' practice squad.
McCarron didn't secure a roster spot heading into Week 1, but he's a phone call away in the event that the Patriots are looking for some in-house help at wide receiver, notably at the slot position. Since cutdowns, the team claimed both Chad Hansen and Amara Dorbah off waivers, and then added Jace Billingsley to the practice squad.

McCarron was waived by the Patriots on Saturday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
The Patriots' woes at wide receiver weren't quite enough to give McCarron a roster spot. He could spend another season on the team's practice squad, with potential for a promotion if injuries strike. The Patriots appear to have kept just five wide receivers, including one who is suspended (Julian Edelman) and one who essentially just plays special teams (Matthew Slater). New England will likely need to add another wideout before Week 1.

McCarron was on the field for 40 snaps in Friday's preseason loss to the Panthers, en route to catching four of his five targets for 49 yards.
With injuries and transactions having thinned out the Patriots' receiving corps, in addition to the fact that Julian Edelman will serve a four-game suspension to start the season, McCarron could end up beating the odds and surviving final roster cuts. If that ends up being the case, McCarron could carve out some sleeper value if he ends up absorbing a share of the team's work in the slot.

McCarron and Braxton Berrios will compete for work on punt-return duties with the Patriots during training camp, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
After splitting time between the Houston and New England practice squads as an undrafted rookie last season, McCarron will have a chance to replace Danny Amendola as the Patriots' top option to bring back punts. It's hard to see the 5-foot-9 wideout earning a roster spot unless he wins the return job, though it's possible he could have an opportunity in the slot if the Patriots are comfortable using Jordan Matthews outside. Julian Edelman's four-game suspension temporarily frees up an extra spot on the 53-man roster.

McCarron is a candidate to serve as the Patriots' punt returner in 2018, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Currently, McCarron would appear to be facing an uphill battle to make the Patriots' 53-man roster heading into Week 1, given the team's depth at wideout in front on him. That said, the speedy 5-foot-9, 185-pounder does have a shot to secure a slot role with the team with a strong preseason. Another campaign on New England's practice squad is a more likely outcome, but the free-agent departure of Danny Amendola creates an opening where McCarron can compete. The team's wideout depth chart is topped by Brandin Cooks, Chris Hogan and slot stalwart Julian Edelman (knee), who is bouncing back from a torn ACL.

McCarron signed a reserve/future contract with the Patriots on Tuesday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
McCarron spent the entire season on the Patriots' practice squad after previously spending time with the Texans. The Patriots signed the entire 2017 practice squad to contracts, as the players will look to make the leap to the active roster in 2018.
