  • J.J. Jones: Let go by Jets

Jones was waived by the Jets on Friday, Randy Lange of the team's official site reports.

Jones spent the beginning of last season with the Chargers -- fielding punts and kickoffs in the first three games -- and eventually found his way to the Jets' practice squad Oct. 22. The 26-year-old was activated for the final regular-season game, where he caught one pass for three yards. Jones was waived to make room for Quincy Adeboyejo, whom the Jets signed Friday.

  • Jets' J.J. Jones: Joins active roster

Jones was promoted to the Jets' 53-man roster Saturday.

Jones signed with the Jets' practice squad in October after being waived by the Chargers, and now makes his way to the active roster. The 26-year-old is likely to be buried on the depth chart, but Quincy Enunwa (ankle) is now on injured reserve and Jeramaine Kearse (Achilles) was already ruled out for Week 17. The Jets have no remaining established options at wide receiver behind Robby Anderson, which could lead to a few offensive opportunities for Jones in the finale.

  • JJ Jones: Cut by Chargers

Jones was waived by the Chargers on Thursday, Ricky Henne of Chargers.com reports.

The undrafted receiver saw action in three games for the Chargers this season, playing exclusively on special teams while serving as the team's kickoff and punt returner. Jones had a 23-yard average on three kickoff returns as well as five punt returns for an average of 4.8 yards.

  • Chargers' J.J. Jones: Fumbles only punt return opportunity

Jones fumbled twice during his only punt return opportunity in Sunday's 38-28 loss to the Chiefs.

It was an ugly debut for the undrafted rookie wide receiver, as Jones' pivotal fumble set up Kansas City for an easy touchdown on the ensuing play. Head coach Anthony Lynn evidently won't take Jones out of the starting returning role, a fact made apparent in a recent report by Jack Wang of the Orange County Register. But the decision to stick with the rookie wide receiver also means Travis Benjamin will continue to be used almost exclusively as an offensive weapon. In previous seasons, Benjamin had been considered the Chargers' main special teams weapon which gave him a bit of fantasy value in leagues that accounted for return yardage.

  • Chargers' J.J. Jones: Locks up spot on roster

Jones earned a spot on the Chargers' 53-man roster, Jack Wang of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.

Jones earned a roster spot despite catching just one pass in the preseason. That's thanks almost entirely to his prowess as a returner, which Jones put on full display during the team's second preseason game, when he recorded a 72-yard punt return for a touchdown. It's unclear if Jones will take over for Travis Benjamin as the team's primary returner, but the undrafted rookie wide receiver will need multiple injuries to players ahead of him on the depth chart in order to earn normal fantasy relevance.

  • Chargers' J.J. Jones: Returns punt for touchdown in preseason win

Jones returned a 72-yard punt for a touchdown during Saturday's 24-14 preseason win over the Seahawks.

The return touchdown did more than just extend the Chargers' preseason lead; it made a major mark on Jones' chances of claiming one of the final spots on the 53-man roster. While Jones might not see much playing time as a wide receiver, the Chargers are in need of a return man and the undrafted rookie could provide the necessary special teams spark, or at the very least give the team some insurance should Travis Benjamin fail to impress in his nominal role.
