Saints' Charlie Smyth: Expected to kick again Week 14
Smyth is likely to be New Orleans' placekicker Sunday in Tampa Bay, Jeff Nowak of Audacy Sports reports.
Smyth kicked for the Saints this past Sunday against Miami and made his lone field-goal try -- a 56-yarder. He also helped New Orleans get the ball back late with a successful onside kick. Smyth was placed back on the Saints' practice squad Monday, but that move was almost certainly procedural, as he did more than enough to earn another elevation for Sunday's Week 14 matchup.

Saints' Charlie Smyth: Back to practice squad
Smyth reverted to the Saints' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Smyth beat out Cade York for the Saints' starting kicking job during Week 13 prep, and the former had a promising NFL debut during Sunday's 21-17 loss to the Dolphins, when he drilled his lone field-goal attempt from 56 yards and successfully converted on an onside kick late in the fourth quarter. Smyth will likely be elevated to the Saints' active roster for a second consecutive game and be available for this Sunday's NFC South clash against the Buccaneers.

Saints' Charlie Smyth: Elevated from PS, kicking Week 13
The Saints elevated Smyth from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, and he will serve as the team's kicker Sunday against the Dolphins.
Smyth competed with Cade York for the kicking job during Week 13 prep after the Saints waived Blake Grupe. Smyth has won that battle, and the Northern Ireland native -- who joined New Orleans in late March as a qualifying international player -- will make his NFL debut Sunday.

Saints' Charlie Smyth: Promising NFL debut in loss
Smyth made his lone field-goal attempt in the Saints' 21-17 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.
With Blake Grupe cut following a disastrous season, Smyth got the elevation from the practice squad over Cade York. Sunday marked Smyth's NFL debut, and he drilled a 56-yard field goal right down the middle with plenty of room to spare. Smyth was also successful with an onside kick in the fourth quarter to give the Saints the ball down by four points with 1:15 to play. New Orleans turned the ball over on downs after a five-play possession.

Charlie Smyth: Competing for starting job
Head coach Kellen Moore said Wednesday that Smyth and Cade York will compete for the Saints' placekicker job, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
York joined Smyth on the practice squad Tuesday, and they'll compete against each other to start against the Dolphins on Sunday after Blake Grupe was waived. Smyth joined the Saints in late March as a qualifying international player, and he has a chance to make his NFL regular-season debut in Week 13.

Charlie Smyth: Makes practice squad
Smyth signed with the Saints' practice squad Wednesday, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
As expected, Blake Grupe won the kicking job in New Orleans, so Smyth will be the de facto backup for the 2025 season like he was last season. Smyth is from Northern Ireland and stood out at the 2024 NFL Combine by hitting 12 of 16 field-goal attempts. He hit all four field-goal tries during the preseason, two of which were from beyond 50 yards.

Charlie Smyth: Cut by New Orleans
The Saints waived Smyth on Tuesday.
Smyth was unable to beat out Blake Grupe for the kicking gig in New Orleans. Smyth did have a good preseason, however, making all four of his field-goal tries and both extra-point attempts.

Saints' Charlie Smyth: Sticking around with New Orleans
The Saints signed Smyth to a reserve/future contract Monday.
Smyth signed with the Saints as a qualifying international player in late March, but he didn't manage to make the 53-man roster after injuring his groin in late August. He stuck around on the practice squad but wasn't elevated for a single game during the 2024 regular season. Smyth will have an opportunity to compete with Blake Grupe for kicking duties in 2025 during OTAs and training camp.

Charlie Smyth: Back healthy
Smyth (groin) signed with the Saints' practice squad Wednesday.
The kicker was waived by the team Tuesday. Smyth's groin injury caused him to miss the Saints' preseason game against the Titans on Sunday. Blake Grupe kicked in that game and ended up as the kicker on the team's depth chart.

Saints' Charlie Smyth: Dealing with groin injury
Head coach Dennis Allen said after Sunday's preseason loss the Titans that Smyth did not play due to groin tightness, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
Smyth has been dealing with the injury since Friday, and Allen relayed that he didn't want the issue to be aggravated. Blake Grupe handled the kicking duties Sunday and went 2-for-2 on his field-goal attempts and made all three of his extra-point tries.

Saints' Charlie Smyth: Hits game-winner in preseason debut
Smyth converted his lone field-goal atttempt during Saturday's 16-14 victory over Arizona.
Smyth got his first and only chance for a field goal with eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, and he did not disappoint, hitting a 37-yarder to seal the victory for New Orleans. The 22-year-old first got on the field for the opening kickoff of the second half, as returning starter Blake Grupe handled the kicking duties in the first half. However, Grupe did step back in for the team's only point-after attempt of the second half, and he went 2-for-2 on field-goal tries for the game. Smyth joined New Orleans through the NFL's International Player Pathway by way of Ireland, and he's likely still considered a longshot to unseat Grupe as the Saints' starting kicker this preseason. His next opportunity will come in Sunday's road contest against the 49ers.
