  • Amare Barno: Let go by Carolina

The Panthers waived Barno (knee) on Friday, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports. The move opens a spot on the Panthers' 90-man roster for undrafted rookie J.J. Weaver. Barno was limited to five regular-season games in 2024 due to a shoulder injury and finished with seven tackles (four solo), including 1.0 sacks. He underwent a clean-up procedure on his knee during the offseason, but it's unclear whether he would be healthy enough to practice right away were he to catch on with another team during training camp.

  • Panthers' Amare Barno: Lands on IR

The Panthers placed Barno (shoulder) on injured reserve Saturday, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports. Barno spent time on IR earlier in the season due to a knee injury and returned to action Dec. 1. However, he hurt his shoulder last Sunday against Tampa Bay, and the injury will keep him out of Carolina's Week 18 season finale. Barno will finish the campaign with seven tackles (four solo), including 1.0 sacks, over five games. He has one more season remaining on his rookie contract.

The third-year pro appeared in just five games for Carolina this season, recording seven total tackles, including 1.0 sacks, over 56 defensive snaps. Expect Cam Gill to serve as the Panthers' top reserve edge rusher while Barno is sidelined in Week 18.

Barno (knee) was downgraded to out for Sunday's matchup with the Chiefs, Alex Zietlow of The Charlotte Observer reports. The linebacker was designated to return from the reserve/PUP list Monday, opening his 21-day practice window to practice with the team before either being added to the 53-man roster or staying on PUP for the rest of the season. Barno suffered an ACL injury late in the 2023 campaign and has been on the list since training camp started. Barno (knee) is not participating in voluntary workouts Tuesday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports. Barno finished out the 2023 campaign on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury in Week 16 against the Packers. Although it's not clear what the injury was or how much longer it may affect him, it appears to still be a big enough issue that the Virginia Tech product is not taking part in drills. Luckily, for the Barno and the Panthers, training camp is still about three months away.

  • Panthers' Amare Barno: Gets chance in Carolina

The Panthers selected Barno in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 189th overall. Barno spent two seasons at community college and barely played in his first season at Virginia Tech, but he lived in opponents' backfields over his final two college campaigns. The 6-foot-5, 246-pound edge rusher recorded 78 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks over 23 games (18 starts) in that stretch. He's an agile player that may have relied too much on his athleticism in college, but Barno has the ingredients to make the NFL leap.
