Ware carried the ball once for a three-yard gain during Sunday's 42-37 win over the Steelers.
After a modest showing in Week 1, Ware's role in the offense shrank further in Week 2, despite the fact that the Chiefs jumped out to a big early lead. Through two weeks, the Kansas City offense is actually more balanced (51/49 pass/run versus 57/43 in 2017) and starter Kareem Hunt is getting a smaller cut of those carries (65.4 percent versus 67.2 percent in 2017), but the production has just not been there yet for Ware. It might be appealing to add any member of the Chiefs' high-flying offense at this point, but hold off on Ware.
Ware had three carries for 32 yards and caught his lone target for eight yards in Sunday's 38-28 win over the Chargers.
All four of Ware's touches came in the first half, either on third down or while the Chiefs were running their no huddle offense before halftime. Meanwhile, Kareem Hunt was held in check, rushing for 49 yards on 16 carries. After suffering a torn PCL and LCL last season, Ware looks healthy, but isn't likely to see a lot of work unless something happens to Hunt.
Ware (knee) toted the rock three times for three yards and caught one pass on two targets for one yard in Saturday's preseason game against the Bears.
Ware figures to slot in as Kareem Hunt's top backup for the Chiefs this season, but is still getting his feet wet in terms of live action, with Saturday's game marking his first since he suffered a torn PCL and LCL last season. There's a decent chance he will see some more work in the preseason finale with the starters slated to sit out the contest.
Ware (knee) agreed to restructure his contract, converting half of his $1.45 million base salary into incentives, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
The incentives apparently won't be too difficult to earn, so this may just be a move to free up cap space in the short term, rather than any sort of commentary on Ware's standing with the team. Looking to bounce back from a torn PCL and LCL suffered last August, the 26-year-old running back was limited to individual drills at June minicamp and will be eased into practice during training camp. Ware is a clear favorite for the No. 2 running back job, but he'll need to fend off competition from Charcandrick West, Damien Williams and Kerwynn Williams. Chiefs head trainer Rick Burkholder said Monday that he wants to take things slow with Ware, even though the fifth-year back looks great so far.
Chiefs head trainer Rick Burkholder said he's sticking to a cautious plan even though Ware looks great so far. Rebounding from PCL and LCL tears suffered last August, the 26-year-old running back was held out for most of the offseason program but did participate in individual drills at June minicamp. Should he eventually gain full clearance, Ware will still need to fend off Damien Williams (shoulder), Charcandrick West and Kerwynn Williams in a competition for slotting behind Kareem Hunt (hamstring). Ware's impressive showing in 2016 would seem to make him the favorite for the No. 2 job if if he looks anything like the same player.
