With season-ending surgery expected on PCL and LCL tears in his right knee, Ware will yield the backfield to rookie Kareem Hunt in Week 1 and beyond. Additionally, C.J. Spiller's release Saturday leaves just one other true running back (Charcandrick West) on the roster, so Hunt appears in line to head a rushing attack that's much more balanced than most in the pass-happy NFL.
While he at least seems to have avoided ACL damage, Ware is still facing a lengthy rehabilitation process that likely will stretch into the offseason. He should be ready for training camp next year, heading into the second season of the two-year extension he signed in March 2016. Ware's absence leaves Kareem Hunt atop the depth chart, with Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller expected to handle supporting roles.
With Ware (knee) likely out for the season, the Chiefs will trot out rookie Kareem Hunt as the starting running back to begin the season, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports. After Hunt, Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller are next up on the depth chart.
The team's medical staff suspects that Ware needs season-ending surgery to repair the PCL and LCL in his right knee, but a final determination hasn't been reached. In the meantime, the Chiefs backfield must refocus around the remaining bodies, namely Hunt, who was nabbed by the team in the third round of this year's draft after they traded up. While Hunt is expected to receive most of the work, it remains to be seen who among Hunt, West and Spiller will replace Ware's short-yardage prowess, as he has at least 20 pounds on each player.
Ware (knee) likely will need season-ending surgery to repair a torn PCL and damaged LCL, Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star reports.
Ware wouldn't be the first player to fight through a torn PCL after resting for a few weeks, but the serious damage to his LCL seemingly rules that out as a possibility. Seattle's Tyler Lockett played through a torn PCL last season, eventually finding his form in December after struggling for most of the year. While a final decision hasn't yet been made, the Chiefs are preparing for Ware to sit out the entire season. Kareem Hunt will head into Week 1 leading the backfield, with Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller filling in behind.
Ware (knee) suffered damage to his LCL in addition to his PCL, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Testing is still inconclusive for Ware, so there's still more to be learned to determine his timeline for return. As it stands, he's currently looking at a 2-to-8 week absence, leaving the Chiefs backfield in the hands of rookie Kareem Hunt -- and to a lesser extent Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller -- until further notice.
