Roberts was targeted twice but didn't record a catch during Friday's preseason game against the Patriots.
Roberts was outperformed by veteran Tim Wright in this one, as the latter hauled in three of three targets for 34 yards Friday. However, Roberts' status as a fourth-round rookie nearly guarantees him a roster spot, so this underwhelming performance isn't a concern in the big picture.
Roberts caught both of his targets for 29 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Jets.
Showing no signs of the injury that limited him in practice this week, Roberts paced Detroit tight ends in every receiving category Saturday and seems to be establishing himself as the No. 3 tight end behind Eric Ebron (hamstring) and Darren Fells. While he could even become the team's primary receiving threat at the position if Ebron remains sidelined into the regular season, Fells is the much more polished blocker who'd likely see the vast majority of playing time when the Lions use single-tight end sets.
Roberts has been dealing with an unknown injury and it isn't clear when he'll be back to full health. In what is a crowded position on the team, Roberts will need to return soon if he wants to see much play time in the regular season.
Roberts nabbed four of six targets for 34 yards in Sunday's preseason win over the Colts
Roberts was Detroit's most targeted option in a game predominantly played by the second- and third-team units. Roberts has reportedly taken some lumps in training camp, but the opportunity is there for him to step up as a red-zone threat for the Lions. Former first-round pick Eric Ebron has yet to live up to his billing, tallying just seven scores in three seasons. Operating in Toledo's open attack, the big-bodied Roberts nabbed a whopping 16 touchdowns during his senior season and could find an early niche near the goal line.
Roberts has struggled with ball security throughout the first week of training camp, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
Roberts, the Lions' third-round draft pick, dropped the first pass thrown to him in Friday's mock game before fumbling the ball on his very next target. While there's no doubting his potential after Roberts snagged 16 scores last year at Toledo, he's unlikely to be any sort of factor on offense his rookie year if he can't hang onto the ball.
