Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Won't return this season
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney (foot) will be sidelined for the rest of the season due to myocarditis, Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic reports.

The 25-year-old has been on the PUP list all season with a foot injury and spent a couple weeks on the reserve/COVID-19 list in late October/early November, and he's apparently dealing with heart inflammation stemming from the virus. Sweeney will take it easy to avoid aggravating the issue and could be back next season if all goes well over the next few months.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Back with team
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Bills (foot) activated Sweeney off the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Sweeney has yet to suit up in game action this season, as he's battled a foot injury and placement on the COVID-19 list. The team is pretty set with Dawson Knox and Tyler Kroft as the top two receiving options at tight end, so if Sweeney does end up playing this season he'll likely only assume a blocking role for the offense.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Moved to COVID-19 list
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney (foot) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday, the Bills' official site reports.

Sweeney was already on the PUP list due to a foot injury -- he hasn't seen action all season -- but because he's been deemed to have been in close contact with fellow tight end Dawson Knox -- who tested positive for COVID-19 -- Sweeney has been placed on the list due to league protocol, even though he hasn't necessarily tested positive for the virus himself.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Out to begin 2020 season
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney (foot) was placed on the reserve PUP list on Saturday, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reports.

The second-year tight end will miss several games and won't be able to start practicing with his teammates until the start of Week 7 at the earliest. Dawson Knox, Tyler Kroft and blocking specialist Lee Smith with make up the tight end corps for Week 1 and beyond.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Foot injury lingers
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney (foot) remains on the PUP list and isn't practicing Wednesday, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reports.

Sweeney currently sits fourth on the depth chart at tight end and is no certainty to secure a roster spot, even though he saw action in six games as a seventh-round rookie last season.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Heads to PUP
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney has been placed on the Active/PUP list due to a foot injury, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reports.

The second-year tight end has some work to do to gain some form of meaningful role in the Buffalo offense now that Tyler Kroft is healthy again and set to compete with Dawson Knox for the top TE spot. We'll see if Sweeney can get back at it in relatively short order so he can stake his claim to the No. 3 role.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Sees action as rookie
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney, a seventh-round pick out of Boston College, appeared in six games for the Bills in 2019 and caught eight balls on 13 targets for 114 yards and no scores.

Sweeney saw most of his action when the team's other tight ends were hurt, but he also served as a healthy inactive more often than not. He's currently fourth in the pecking order as the Bills gear up for 2020, while the team has already kicked the tires on Greg Olsen. However, teammate Tyler Kroft could get released if the Bills try to free up some cash space. Expect Sweeney to have to earn a roster spot once training camp rolls around.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Healthy inactive
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney was inactive for the first time all season for Sunday's win over the Dolphins.

The rookie from Boston College is not hurt, but with Tyler Kroft (ankle) finally returning to action there was no room to get Sweeney in the lineup. Lee Smith is needed as a blocker, so unless Kroft or fellow rookie Dawson Knox (who's having a strong rookie season) gets hurt, Sweeney won't be seeing steady action for a while.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Low volume in win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney caught one of three targets for three yards in Sunday's win over the Bengals.

Even though starter Tyler Kroft remains out with foot and ankle injuries, it was Dawson Knox (3-67-1) who was a far bigger part of the game plan Sunday, with the latter on the field for 56 percent of the offensive plays to Sweeney's 29 percent. Sweeney's role could be even further reduced once Kroft eventually returns. The seventh-round rookie did a nice job to make the team and has turned in a few key plays already, but he looks resigned to a depth role during his first NFL campaign.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Makes impact in debut
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney caught both of his targets for 35 yards in Buffalo's come-from-behind win over the Jets on Sunday.

That was third on the team in yardage for the game. It was also the only meaningful contribution from Buffalo tight ends, as Dawson Knox had one catch for one yard and Lee Smith didn't have any. Starter Tyler Kroft (broken foot) should be back in a week or two, but Sweeney, a seventh-rounder, may be winning the battle for the No. 2 pass-catching tight end role. Quarterback Josh Allen got a lot of time this summer with Sweeney while most of the other tight ends were battling injuries.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Sits Thursday's preseason finale
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney did not see the field during Thursday's preseason win over the Vikings.

That's actually a good thing for Sweeney, as the Bills did not suit up any regulars across their first two units. It also shows how far the seventh-round rookie has come in his first camp. Sweeney, fellow rookie Dawson Knox and blocking specialist Lee Smith look like locks for the roster, while it's incumbent Jason Croom who probably needs an injury spot declared for starter Tyler Kroft (broken foot) in order to see his longshot chances come through.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Catching on to pro game
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney hauled in both of his targets for 47 yards during Friday's preseason win over the Panthers.

The rookie seventh-rounder reportedly had a good week of joint practices with the Panthers and has been making a strong impression on quarterback Josh Allen and the coaching staff. "Tommy has been fantastic," Allen told the Bills' official site. "He's answered when his number has been called. Obviously he's been forced into a lot of action with the ones. He's made some big plays for us already ... So I really appreciated what he's been doing and the results are showing." Sweeney is still behind several others on the depth chart, but with a banged-up crew ahead of him he's starting to cement a roster spot, and could be needed for a bigger role should injuries linger into the regular season.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: No catches Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney dropped his only target in his preseason debut against the Colts on Thursday.

With Tyler Kroft (foot) and fellow rookie Dawson Knox (hamstring) on the shelf, Sweeney has looked good in training camp practices as the pass-catching tight end. He didn't do much with the chance in the team's first game action of the season, though he'll get more opportunities should the two aforementioned players above him remain slow to heal.

Bills' Tommy Sweeney: Temporary first-team looks
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Sweeney has been seeing looks with the first team, as three other tight ends are working through injuries, Nate Mendelson of the Bills' official site reports.

Sweeney, a rookie seventh-rounder out of Boston College, may have originally been a question mark to make the team, but several injuries have pushed him up the depth chart. Right now, he's the top pass-catching tight end in camp. Tyler Kroft (broken foot) is expected back somewhere around the start of the regular season, while fellow rookie Dawson Knox (hamstring) probably will be back sooner. Lee Smith is locked in with a roster spot but primarily is a blocker. As of now, Sweeney probably has the edge over Jason Croom (hamstring) if only because he's healthy and the Bills can only afford to carry so many injured guys.

Tommy Sweeney: Buffalo bound
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Bills selected Sweeney in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft, 228th overall.

There figures to be a competition between Sweeney and fellow rookie Dawson Knox for the backup tight end spot behind Tyler Kroft, while Jason Croom is also in the mix. Sweeney was a four-year contributor at Boston College with 99 career receptions for 1,281 yards and 10 touchdowns. While his production is superior to Knox's, his athleticism lags behind. Sweeney ran just a 4.83 40-yard dash and his broad jump and short shuttles at his pro day were middling as well. It's not a guarantee that he breaks camp on the 53-man roster.
