    Tavares had an assist to go with a game-high eight shots in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime win over the Rangers. Tavares was buzzing around the net all night, reaching the eight-shot mark for a second consecutive game. One of those eight shots produced a rebound that Timothy Liljegren pounced on to tie the score with less than five minutes left in regulation. Tavares' 48 points through 49 games are good for fourth on the Maple Leafs.

  • Maple Leafs' John Tavares: Two points against former club

    Tavares scored a power-play goal and added an even-strength assist in Monday's 5-2 win over the Islanders. The 32-year-old hasn't always had a lot of success against the team that drafted him -- Tavares has only four goals and seven points in 10 career games against the Isles -- but he made an impact Monday, setting up William Nylander for the Leafs' first goal of the night early in the second period, then having Nylander return the favor less than three minutes later. Tavares twice helped the Maple Leafs double up the Flyers, giving Toronto a 2-1 lead in the first before putting the hosts up 4-2 in the third with a highlight reel goal on which he turned his defender inside out before jamming home his own rebound. Prior to scoring three goals himself, Tavares helped Auston Matthews get the Maple Leafs on the board with the extra man. Tavares has seven goals and seven assists through 11 games, putting the second-line center above a point-per-game pace for the first time since 2018-19, when he potted a career-best 47 goals en route to 88 points in 82 games.

Number 91 has gotten off to a hot start this season. His assist Monday against the Coyotes made him the fifth-highest scorer in the NHL since he joined the league. It was also his 900th point, which makes him the 12th active player list to hit that milestone. The milestones will likely continue for Tavares -- he's eight goals shy of 400 (392) and 47 games from the 1,000 mark on his career.
