  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Resumes skating Wednesday

Hagelin (eye) was on the ice with the Capitals' strength and conditioning coach during Wednesday's optional skate, Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic reports. Hagelin was in a full face shield and not wearing any pads while he did some light skating drills with the training staff. The 33-year-old is unlikely to play again this season, but his presence on the ice is an indicator that he is progressing after undergoing two eye procedures to address a freak injury sustained during practice in early March.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Facing second surgery

Hagelin is expected to undergo a second surgery to address his eye injury, Samantha Pell of The Washington Post reports. At this point, Hagelin should be considered questionable at best to return this season. If he does get back into the lineup, the winger will look to get back over the 20-point threshold after missing that mark last season and figures to take on a bottom-six spot in the lineup.

Washington announced Sunday that Hagelin is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery on his left eye earlier in the week. Hagelin is scheduled to have additional follow-up examinations in the weeks to come before the Capitals determine a more precise timeline for his return. Before suffering the injury, Hagelin had provided three goals and 11 assists through 53 games.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Placed on IR

Hagelin (eye) designated for long-term injured reserve Thursday, per Tom Gulitti of NHL.com. Hagelin has averaged 14:34 of ice time and registered seven points over the last 10 games. The 33-year-old underwent eye surgery Tuesday and currently does not have a clear timeline for recovery established. He will miss most, if not all, of March due to his LTIR status.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Undergoes eye surgery

Hagelin had surgery on his injured eye Tuesday and will be seeing another doctor to determine the next steps, according to general manager Brian MacLellan, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports. The fact that Hagelin immediately had surgery to repair his damaged eye after Tuesday's incident at practice certainly doesn't bode well for the winger being able to return anytime soon. At this point, with two months remaining in the regular season, the 33-year-old Swede could be in danger of missing the rest of the campaign, though the team hasn't issued a specific recovery timeline.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Out long term

Hagelin (eye) will be out for "an extended period of time," Samantha Pell of The Washington Post reports. Hagelin took a stick to the face toward the end of Tuesday's practice and has suffered an eye injury as a result. The 33-year-old Swede has been a valuable member of Washington's highly utilized fourth line alongside Nic Dowd and Garnet Hathaway and his absence -- particularly on the penalty kill -- will surely be felt by a Capitals team that has struggled mightily to keep players in the lineup throughout the 2021-22 campaign.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Strong two-way play in win

Hagelin had two assists and a plus-4 rating in Thursday's 5-3 win over Philadelphia. Washington's fourth line carried the team to victory in this one, and Hagelin was a key contributor. He assisted on the game-tying and game-winning goals scored 1:45 apart by Garnet Hathaway. The speedster has a modest 14 points in 50 games, but most of Hagelin's value comes from his responsible defensive game.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Pots goal Thursday

Hagelin tallied a goal and added two shots during Thursday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens. Hagelin is on a bit of a tear with a goal and four points over his last four games. The Swedish winger is well matched on the fourth line alongside Nic Dowd and Garnet Hathaway but does not generate offense consistently enough to be of much help in most fantasy circles.

Hagelin was placed on the COVID-19 protocols list Monday. Hagelin will not participate in Monday's contest with Boston due to his entry into virus protocols, his first absence of 2021-22. The 33-year-old is up to seven points on the season, averaging 14:04 of ice time. Alexei Protas will likely fill the vacancy.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Rare multi-point night in win

Hagelin scored an empty-net goal and added an assist in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Predators. Hagelin assisted on Nic Dowd's first-period marker, then potted a valuable insurance tally late. The speedster's an excellent defensive forward, but his skill set doesn't translate to much fantasy success, as Hagelin has just two goals and five assists in 32 games.

Hagelin (illness) took part in Friday's morning skate and will play against the Penguins, Samantha Pell of The Washington Post reports. Hagelin missed Thursday's practice with a non-COVID illness, but appears ready to play in Friday's showdown against the Penguins. The 33-year-old will line up on the second line alongside Lars Eller and Conor Sheary but will likely shuffle down to the fourth line once Nic Dowd (COVID-19 protocols) and Garnet Hathaway (COVID-19 protocols) return to the lineup.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Tests negative for COVID-19

Hagelin (illness) returned a negative COVID-19 test Thursday, JJ Regan of NBC Sports Washington reports. Hagelin has three points in his last four games while averaging 16:12 of ice time and for now, appears to be dealing with a non-COVID illness. If healthy enough to play against the Penguins on Friday, the veteran winger should be in the mix to crack the top six, especially after Evgeny Kuznetsov (lower body) sustained an injury at practice Thursday.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Misses practice with illness

Hagelin (illness) did not take part in Thursday's practice, Samantha Pell of The Washington Post reports. The Capitals are still awaiting the test results to see if Hagelin's illness is COVID-19 related, as the team is already missing Nic Dowd, Garnet Hathaway and Trevor van Riemsdyk due to the league's protocols. The 33-year-old's availability for Friday's showdown against the Penguins remains unclear.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Dishes helper

Hagelin tallied an assist while logging 14:08 of ice time during Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Avalanche. The helper is Hagelin's first point of the season, and he's managed an additional five shots and a plus-1 rating in his first three games. The speedy winger is a valuable role player for the Capitals but isn't much of a fantasy asset these days.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Ends goal-scoring slump

Hagelin tallied a goal on three shots and added two blocks in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Bruins. Hagelin got the Capitals on the board with 3:45 left in the second period, tapping home a loose puck on the doorstep to knot the game at 1-1. It snapped a 12-game goal drought for Hagelin, who last tickled the twine April 13. The veteran winger finished the regular season with six goals and 16 points in 56 games.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Dishes helper Wednesday

Hagelin tallied an assist, two shots and seven PIM in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Rangers. The 32-year-old winger has been a valuable role player for the Capitals on an effective fourth line with Nic Dowd and Garnet Hathaway. However, with five goals and 15 points in 53 games, Hagelin does not get on the scoresheet with enough consistency to merit fantasy consideration in standard formats.

  • Capitals' Carl Hagelin: Pockets fifth goal

Hagelin scored a goal on two shots and registered one hit in a 6-1 win over the Flyers on Tuesday. Hagelin powered a wrist shot through Philadelphia netminder Brian Elliott late in the first period to give the Capitals a 4-1 lead. Hagelin has provided five goals and eight assists in 43 contests this season in a depth role. A point Thursday against Buffalo would give him his first three-game point streak of the year.
