Van Riemsdyk (upper body) was activated from injured reserve and is playing Sunday against visiting Minnesota, JJ Regan of NBC Sports Washington reports. The 30-year-old blueliner missed five games with the injury, but he's taking pregame line rushes ahead of Sunday's game on the third pairing with Justin Schultz and has evidently recovered. • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Dishes helper Thursday

Van Riemsdyk registered an assist and a plus-3 rating during Thursday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens. The helper gives Van Riemsdyk a goal and six points in 16 games since the calendar rolled into 2022. The 30-year-old defender has had quite a renaissance during the 2021-22 campaign -- posting a goal and 13 points in 44 games -- after spending much of the previous season as a healthy scratch, but fantasy managers in standard formats should probably steer clear until he generates offense with more consistency.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Nets first goal of season

Van Riemsdyk scored a goal in Friday's 5-0 win over the Stars. Van Riemsdyk tallied at 13:08 of the first period, providing the Capitals with a little extra insurance in the blowout win. The 30-year-old hasn't done much on offense this season -- the goal was his first of the season, and he's picked up five of his 12 points through 12 appearances in January. The defenseman has added 48 shots on net, 72 blocked shots and an even plus-minus rating while mainly playing in a bottom-four role.

The defenseman has provided modest offense from a third-pairing role this season, collecting nine helpers in 30 outings. He's added 35 shots on net and 50 blocked shots, but fantasy managers likely won't need to keep him on their radar during the campaign.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Posts assist in overtime loss

Van Riemsdyk logged an assist, four blocked shots, two hits and two shots on goal in Sunday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Devils. Van Riemsdyk helped out on a Nic Dowd goal in the third period. The 30-year-old van Riemsdyk is up to eight assists, 33 shots on net and 49 blocked shots through 29 contests this season. His role in the lineup could be reduced once Martin Fehervary (COVID-19 protocols) is cleared to return, as the return of Michal Kempny in December has made the Capitals' blue line a bit more crowded.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Ineligible to play Friday

Van Riemsdyk has been placed back into the NHL's COVID-19 protocols due to Canadian travel restrictions and will be unavailable against Winnipeg on Friday. Van Riemsdyk won't travel with the team for its trip north of the border but should be back in the lineup for Sunday's home matchup with the Kings. It will fall to either Matt Irwin or Dennis Cholowski to step onto the blue line for the Caps in Friday's tilt.

Van Riemsdyk will return from COVID protocol to play against the Blackhawks on Wednesday, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports. • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Enters COVID-19 protocols

Van Riemsdyk (COVID-19 protocols) has entered the COVID-19 protocols and will be unavailable for Saturday's road match against the Blue Jackets, Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic reports. Van Riemsdyk joins Nic Dowd as Washington's players currently on the COVID list. The 30-year-old has seven assists in 24 games thus far into a bounceback season and is likely to have Matt Irwin fill his spot on the third defense pairing alongside Justin Schultz for Saturday's game. Van Riemsdyk will need two consecutive negative tests before returning, so his availability for Monday's game against the Ducks is uncertain.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Collects assist

Van Riemsdyk tallied an assist, a plus-2 rating and two blocked shots during Sunday's 6-1 win over the Penguins. Van Riemsdyk has six helpers in 15 games and is on pace for a career year -- quite the turnaround given that he was a healthy scratch for the majoriy of the 2020-21 season. The 30-year-old is locked into a regular role this season and merits fantasy consideration in deeper formats if he can produce offense more consistently.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Dishes helper Monday

Van Riemsdyk tallied an assist and two shots while logging 17:16 of ice time during Monday's 7-5 victory over the Senators. Van Riemsdyk has been on fire to start the season with four points in his first six games -- putting him on pace to shatter his career high of 16 points (2016-17, 2017-18). The 30-year-old isn't likely to show up on the scoresheet with this level of regularity moving forward, but van Riemsdyk is carving out enough fantasy value to merit consideration in deeper leagues after spending most of the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season as a healthy scratch.

Van Riemsdyk registered a short-handed assist and four PIM while logging 17:25 of ice time during Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Rangers. Van Riemsdyk was expected to get more regular playing time following the offseason departures of Brenden Dillon and Zdeno Chara and provided early dividends with the shorthanded helper. The 30-year-old posted three points in 20 games during the 2020-21 season.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: In line for larger role

Van Riemsdyk could be in for a regular role following the departures of Brenden Dillon and Zdeno Chara, JJ Regan of NBC Sports Washington reports. Regan speculates that -- based on remarks from management and coaches at the beginning of training camp -- Van Riemsdyk could regularly occupy one of the two vacant left defense spots following the offseason roster shuffle after spending most of 2020-21 as a reserve option. The 30-year-old notched a goal and three points in 20 games last season, and though a regular role would certainly help, it's likely not enough to significantly buoy his fantasy value.

Van Riemsdyk tallied an assist and a plus-3 rating while logging 18:07 of ice time during Saturday's 6-3 win over the Islanders. Van Riemsdyk has been pressed into service with Justin Schultz (lower body) out of the lineup and figures to fill the void on the second defense pairing while the latter heals up. The 29-year-old has two points in 12 games and isn't likely to yield significant fantasy dividends.

Van Riemsdyk signed a two-year, $1.9 million contract extension with the Capitals on Sunday, Frank Seravalli of TSN.ca reports. Van Riemsdyk has served as a healthy scratch more often than not this season, but the Capitals value his veteran presence and the depth he provides on the blue line. Through nine games this year, he's recorded a goal, eights shots and 13 blocked shots.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Role not expected to change

Head coach Peter Laviolette indicated his satisfaction with Washington's defense corps, indicating that van Riemsdyk is likely to remain in a depth role for the forseeable future, JJ Regan of NBC Sports Washington reports. Van Riemsdyk has posted a single goal in seven games this season and has not drawn into the lineup since Feb. 7. The 29-year-old defender can be safely ignored for fantasy purposes until his prospects for playing time improve.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Pots goal

Van Riemsdyk tallied a goal, a plus-2 rating, two hits and two blocked shots while logging 20:23 of ice time during Saturday's 4-3 overtime win against the Bruins. The marker was van Riemsdyk's first point with the Capitals after joining the team as a free agent in October of 2020. The 29-year-old is likely to have difficulty securing regular ice time on a deep Washington defense corps now that Dmitry Orlov has returned from COVID-19 quarantine, and therefore he has very limited fantasy appeal.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Draws into lineup

Van Riemsdyk will be in the lineup Sunday against the Sabres, Samantha Pell of The Washington Post reports. Van Riemsdyk will make his debut for the Capitals in place of Nick Jensen on the third defense pairing. Having never eclipsed the 20-point barrier in a single season, the 29-year-old has yet to establish himself as a fantasy-worthy asset.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Earns one-year gig in Washington

Van Riemsdyk signed a one-year, $800,000 contract with the Capitals on Saturday, Frank Seravalli of TSN.ca reports. Van Riemsdyk spent a lot of time as a healthy scratch with the Hurricanes last season, as he played 49 games and recorded eight points. The 29-year-old will have an opportunity to carve out a more consistent role with the Capitals, but his ceiling is as a third-pairing defenseman.
