  • Avalanche's Sampo Ranta: Placed on waivers

Ranta was waived by the Avalanche on Thursday, Peter Baugh of The Athletic reports. Assuming he passes through waivers unclaimed, Ranta will head to AHL Colorado. The 22-year-old Finn went scoreless through 10 appearances with the big club last season.

  • Avalanche's Sampo Ranta: Snipes pair of goals in AHL

Ranta scored two goals on three shots for AHL Colorado on Saturday. Ranta, who started the season with the Avalanche, was demoted to the AHL Eagles after 10 scoreless games. The 21-year-old Finn went top shelf late in the second period in what might be described as a goal-scorer's goal. • Avalanche's Sampo Ranta: Demoted to minors

Ranta was sent down to AHL Colorado on Monday. With Valeri Nichushkin (upper body) seemingly ready to return, the Avs needed to make room on the 23-man roster. As a result, Ranta was reassigned to the minors but should remain a strong candidate to be recalled should the need arise.

  • Avalanche's Sampo Ranta: Another quiet night

Ranta had one shot on goal and one hit over 8:42 of ice time in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Blue Jackets. Ranta is nominally on the third line, but his shifts are often skipped, leaving him with an average TOI of 10:54. Saturday's game was the fourth time in 10 games he's played under 10 minutes. Ranta entered the season as a prospect on the rise, but thus far there hasn't been much to get excited about from a fantasy perspective.

Ranta was activated for Game 1 of Colorado's playoff series against Vegas on Sunday. He finished minus-1 in the Avalanche's 7-1 win. Ranta skated on the fourth line, supplanting Carl Soderberg, who filled in for an injured Alex Newhook for the final two games of Colorado's first-round sweep of St. Louis. Ranta and Newhook were the fourth line wingers for Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. Game 2 is Wednesday in Denver .
