  • Blue Jackets' Vladislav Gavrikov: Suiting up Thursday

Gavrikov (upper body) is expected to play Thursday versus the Hurricanes, per the NHL media site. • Blue Jackets' Vladislav Gavrikov: Considered game-time call Thursday

Gavrikov (upper body) is one of a handful of game-time decisions ahead of Thursday's clash with Carolina, Blue Jackets team reporter Jeff Svoboda reports. Gavrikov was on the first pairing for line rushes at Thursday's game-day skate, which would seem to indicate he will be ready to play. If the blueliner can't play, Marcus Bjork would likely jump back into the lineup while Gavin Bayreuther could see a significant uptick in ice time. For his part, the 27-year-old Gavrikov is currently stuck in a 12-game pointless streak during which he recorded 13 shots, 12 hits and 16 blocks.

Gavrikov contributed a goal and an assist in a 5-4 overtime win against Philadelphia on Tuesday. That gives Gavrikov two goals and four points in 15 games in 2022-23. He's been logging over 22:10 of ice time this season, but he's received next to no power-play ice time. Gavrikov scored in overtime Tuesday, leading the Blue Jackets to their first win of the season, a 4-3 decision over the winless Canucks. Gavrikov, who earned a career-high 28 assists during his third full season, showed he could have a second career after his hockey career ends. Standing at the side of the net, the 26-year-old defenseman kneed the puck, soccer-style, to Justin Danforth, who batted in the pitched puck. It was his first point of the season. The 2015 sixth-round draft pick also showed he can contribute clutch goals, scoring the game-winner off a 2-on-1 break at 3:21 of overtime.

The Russian blueliner has a career-high 21 points with 52 shots on net, 74 blocked shots, 77 hits and a plus-8 rating through 46 appearances. Gavrikov recorded two assists, five hits and two blocked shots in Friday's 4-2 win over the Canucks. Gavrikov helped out on both of the Blue Jackets' third-period tallies as they took control of the game. The Russian blueliner is already a well-established physical presence, but with two goals and 10 assists in 18 games, his offense has taken a step forward. He produced the same scoring line in 55 contests last season. It's basically a given that his shooting percentage will dip from 9.1 percent, but he's added a plus-14 rating, 27 hits and 34 blocks to become a true top-four defenseman this year.

While Monday's goals were his first of the season, he's now up to nine points in 16 games, a huge jump in pace from the 12 points in 55 games he managed in 2020-21. With Seth Jones in Chicago, there's room for a second threat on the Columbus blue line behind Zach Werenski, and Gavrikov is stepping up to claim that spot.

Gavrikov stuffed the scoresheet in this one, but performances like this are few and far between for the stay-at-home blueliner. This was Gavrikov's first multi-point performance of the season, and it came with just two games to play.
