  • Hurricanes' Jesperi Kotkaniemi: Scoring drought continues

Kotkaniemi failed to register a point for a seventh consecutive game Saturday against the Wild. He has just one goal and two assists in 18 games this season. Much more was expected of Kotkaniemi this year after the 22-year old Finn signed an eight-year, $38.5 million extension with the Canes back in March. Needless to say, he will have to bust out in a big way to have any hope of matching his 12-goal, 29-point season from a year ago. For now, he continues to skate mainly on the team's second line with Andrei Svechnikov and Seth Jarvis.

  • Hurricanes' Jesperi Kotkaniemi: Ends goal drought

Kotkaniemi scored a goal and added two PIM in Friday's 5-3 win over the Sabres. Kotkaniemi hadn't scored all year, and he'd gone seven games without a point entering Friday. He changed that with a third-period marker, which ended up as the game-winning goal. The 22-year-old was due to break out -- he recorded multiple shots on net in six of the seven games during his slump. For the year, he's at three points, 19 shots, 14 hits, eight PIM and a plus-2 rating while mainly playing as the second-line center.

  • Hurricanes' Jesperi Kotkaniemi: Credited with helper

Kotkaniemi notched an assist and two hits in Monday's 5-1 win over the Kraken. Kotkaniemi helped out on a goal by linemate Andrei Svechnikov in the second period. The 22-year-old Kotkaniemi is up to two assists and a plus-4 rating in three games, but he's not doing much else to generate his own offense. The Finn has just two shots on goal so far, so he'll need to take a few more chances himself to become more productive.

  • Hurricanes' Jesperi Kotkaniemi: Garners assist in loss

Kotkaniemi posted an assist and two shots on goal in Monday's 6-2 loss to the Rangers in Game 7. Kotkaniemi helped out on a Max Domi goal in the third period of the lopsided loss. Both of Kotkaniemi's assists in the postseason came in the second round after he was held off the scoresheet altogether in the first round. The 21-year-old had a reasonable 29 points in 66 regular-season outings, and he's locked in for the next eight years after signing a max-term extension with the Hurricanes in March.

  • Hurricanes' Jesperi Kotkaniemi: Earns helper in win

Kotkaniemi recorded one assist, two shots and one block in 9:07 of ice time versus the Rangers on Wednesday. Kotkaniemi logged his fewest minutes of the postseason, in part due to the lack of power-play ice time. With his tally, the 21-year-old winger brought a seven-game pointless streak to a close but shouldn't be expected to provide much in the way of offensive support without opportunities with the man advantage.

  • Hurricanes' Jesperi Kotkaniemi: Won't play Monday

Kotkaniemi (undisclosed) will not be available versus the Coyotes on Monday but is considered day-to-day, Sara Civian of The Athletic reports. Kotkaniemi was just two games back from a long-term injury absence that saw him miss eight games. It's not immediately clear if the absences are related but it's certainly not good news for a Hurricanes squad that will also be without Jordan Staal (upper body) and suddenly finds itself rather thin down the middle. Where Kotkaniemi fits into the lineup upon his return to action will likely depend on whether Staal is available, though top six might be a stretch for Kotkaniemi at this point.

  • Hurricanes' Jesperi Kotkaniemi: Signs maximum-length extension

Kotkaniemi agreed to an eight-year extension with the Hurricanes on Monday. The contract is expected to carry an annual cap hit of $4.82 million, per PuckPedia, resulting in a total contract value around $38.5 million. The $6.1 million offer sheet Carolina used to lure Kotkaniemi out of Montreal gave him plenty of leverage with a $6.1 million qualifying offer to come if he hit restricted free agency this offseason. Agent Markus Lehto used his position of power to negotiate his client a contract with the maximum allowed term. Despite scoring a modest 11 goals and 23 points through 59 games with the Hurricanes, the 21-year-old Kotkaniemi now has a contract that will run through the remainder of his 20s.

  • Hurricanes' Jesperi Kotkaniemi: Clears protocols

Kotkaniemi has cleared the NHL's COVID-19 protocols and has joined the Hurricanes in Minnesota ahead of Saturday's matchup with the Wild, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports. The Hurricanes will return home for a Wednesday night matchup with the Panthers following Saturday's contest, so the fact that Kotkaniemi made the trip to Minnesota suggests he should be an option against the Wild. He's tallied nine goals and 20 points thorugh 42 contests this season.

  • Hurricanes' Jesperi Kotkaniemi: Enters COVID protocol

Kotkaniemi was placed in COVID protocol Sunday. The league isn't testing asymptomatic players anymore, so Kotkaniemi is likely experiencing symptoms. He'll sit out Monday's game in Toronto and will be hard-pressed to test out of the protocol in time to return Tuesday in Ottawa.

The former Hab ended a three-game point drought and a six-game goalless stretch with the outburst, and his first tally of the night wound up being the game-winner. Kotkaniemi has only nine goals and 18 points through 36 games on the season, but over half of that production (three goals and 10 points) has come in his last 10 contests.

  • Hurricanes' Jesperi Kotkaniemi: Extends point streak to six games

Kotkaniemi notched an assist, two hits and two PIM in Friday's 6-3 win over the Flames. Kotkaniemi set up Brady Skjei's insurance tally in the third period. The assist extended Kotkaniemi's point streak to six games, during which he has one goal and seven helpers. The Finn probably still needs to prove himself a bit more on offense, as he's yet to be much of a consistent scorer in his career. This season, he's at seven tallies, nine assists, 43 shots on net and 42 hits in 32 contests.
