  • Taro Hirose: Headed to Germany

Hirose agreed to terms on a one-year deal with EHC Munchen of the DEL on Friday. Hirose spent the entirety of the 2023-24 campaign in the minors with AHL Grand Rapids, registering nine goals and 27 helpers in 54 regular-season contests. The Michigan State product has appeared in 60 NHL contests for Detroit, notching four goals and 16 assists. The move overseas could mark the end of the 28-year-old's NHL career.

  • Red Wings' Taro Hirose: Lands on waivers

Hirose was placed on waivers Friday, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Hirose managed only three NHL games last season, so it's no surprise that the 27-year-old was unable to crack the Detroit lineup. He'll begin 2023-24 with AHL Grand Rapids if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

  • Red Wings' Taro Hirose: Returned to minors

Hirose was sent back to AHL Grand Rapids on Wednesday. Hirose made his season debut against the Penguins on Tuesday in which he notched one shot, one hit and one block in 7:57 of ice time. If Alex Chiasson (undisclosed) is unable to play against the Hurricanes on Thursday, the 26-year-old Hirose could be called back up prior to puck drop.

  • Red Wings' Taro Hirose: Elevated from minors

Hirose was recalled from AHL Grand Rapids on Tuesday under emergency conditions. Hirose hasn't played in an NHL game since the end of the 2021-22 campaign, suiting up against the Maple Leafs on April 26. Considering the winger was added under emergency conditions, there could be another injury among the Wings' forwards. If Hirose plays against the Penguins on Tuesday, it would likely be in a bottom-six role where he shouldn't be expected to log significant minutes.

Even if he does suit up against Ottawa on Tuesday, Hirose figures to fill a bottom-six role in which he'll see limited minutes.

  • Red Wings' Taro Hirose: Returned to AHL affiliate

Hirose scored a power-play goal in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Kraken. Hirose gave the Red Wings a 2-0 lead with his second-period marker, his first since the 2019-20 campaign. The 25-year-old has picked up three points, including two on the power play, in four games since he was recalled from AHL Grand Rapids. He'll likely stick in a fourth-line role for now, but his place on the roster should be safe for a while with Robby Fabbri (lower body) out for the season and Carter Rowney (undisclosed) and Mitchell Stephens (lower body) still lacking a timeline to return.

Hirose signed a one-year contract with Detroit on Tuesday. Hirose was limited to just six appearances with the Wings last year in which he garnered two assists, 10 shots and two blocks while averaging 14:22 of ice time. The 25-year-old winger is far from a lock for the Opening Night lineup against the Lightning on Oct. 14 and may have to split his time between the NHL and AHL.

  • Red Wings' Taro Hirose: Barely seen at top level

Hirose only appeared in six contests for the Red Wings this season, adding two assists over that span. Hirose performed well with AHL Grand Rapids, as he racked up five goals and 23 assists over 29 contests. The former Michigan State Spartan finds himself in an awkward spot since he's set to become a Group 6 unrestricted free agent but might be too good to keep toiling in a minor-league system. Hirose actually saw 26 games at the top level in 2019-20, so it's a bit concerning that he saw such sparse playing time on the big stage this time around.
