KENT, Ohio (AP) Kato Nelson completed a pass to Andre Williams for an 8-yard score in overtime and Akron's defense stopped a 2-point conversion as the Zips beat Kent State 24-23 on a rainy Saturday to keep the wooden Wagon Wheel trophy for the fourth straight year.

Kent State had the ball second in the extra session and Justin Rankin connected with Woody Barrett from 29 yards out, but a low snap was botched on the 2-point conversion attempt - ending the game.

Nelson threw for 219 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Akron (3-3). He also had 17 carries for 90 yards and a score.

Nelson tied it at 17 midway through the third quarter on a 55-yard run, capping a 10-play, 76-yard drive with his fourth TD of the season.

Barrett passed for 188 yards and a score and rushed for 81 yards and a TD for Kent State (1-7).

It was the 61st meeting between the schools located 11 miles apart.
