Auburn coach Gus Malzahn announced Tuesday that redshirt freshman Sean White will start at quarterback against Mississippi State

"Anytime you change quarterbacks, it's not an easy decision," Malzahn said, according to AL.com. "I feel like [White] needs a shot right now."

The news comes on the heels of offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee telling reporters that Johnson was "expected" to start against the Bulldogs following a disappointing performance against LSU in Baton Rouge.

Malzahn said that Johnson "will support Sean" this week, and the Tigers coach would not commit to White over Johnson for the rest of the season.

"I'll say this from a coach's standpoint and player's standpoint, you take it one game at a time and that's the way we're doing it. We're thinking about nothing but Mississippi State," Malzahn said

Through three games, Johnson has completed just 59.7 percent of his passes for 473 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. At halftime of the LSU game, Gus Malzahn told CBS Sports' Allie LaForce that the Tigers would consider a change at quarterback but White remained on the sideline.

This will be the first action for White, a four-star prospect out of Florida from the 2014 recruiting class.
