Michigan tight end Jake Butt tore his ACL in the Wolverines' 33-32 loss to Florida State in Friday night's Orange Bowl, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Butt suffered the injury in the first quarter of the Michigan loss and now will have to have surgery to repair the tear.

The injury will keep him from participating in the NFL Draft process as he recovers from surgery, which will likely cause him to drop on draft boards. He was ranked as the third best tight end prospect in this draft and projected as a second round pick on CBS Sports' draft prospect rankings.

Butt's injury provides another example of why we're seeing more players, like Leonard Fournette and Christian McCaffrey, skipping bowl games, to begin preparations for the NFL Draft. The risk of injury is ever present in a football game, and in a non-College Football Playoff bowl game that amounts to an exhibition, the reward of playing in it might not outweigh that injury risk that could impact future earnings at the professional level.

Butt, as many NFL prospects do, took out a total disability insurance and loss of value insurance that would begin paying if he slips past the second round.
