Smith was designated for assignment by the Athletics on Tuesday.
Smith allowed nine earned runs over 12 innings of relief earlier this season with the A's and was showing a brutal 9.61 ERA in 19.2 innings at Triple-A Las Vegas. The 28-year-old right-hander is now off the 40-man roster.
