Carpenter is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Athletics.
Miguel Cabrera will serve as the Tigers' designated hitter and Andy Ibanez is playing right field. Carpenter was also absent from the starting lineup Tuesday, though he did draw a walk as a pinch hitter and holds a strong .825 OPS through 43 games (151 plate appearances) this year.
