The White Sox designated Turley for assignment Tuesday.
Chicago removed Turley from the 40-man roster to clear spot for Jake Lamb, who is a candidate to fill a strong-side platoon role at designated hitter. Turley likely would have been in line to serve as a low-leverage reliever in the White Sox bullpen if he had remained with the team for Opening Day.
