Calvin Austin: Explosive workout in Indy
Share Video
Austin impressed at his workout Thursday at the combine with a 4.32-second 40-yard dash to go with a 39.0-inch vertical jump and a 135.0-inch broad jump.
As an undersized receiver (5-foot-8, 170), Austin needed to show standout athleticism this week and he did just that. Austin has obvious blazing speed and explosiveness that matches well with what he showed on film at Memphis. Austin was one of the most productive players in college football over the last two seasons with 137 catches for 2,202 yards and 19 touchdowns and he went over 1,000 yards in each of those campaigns. The question now lies with his pro projection as there is not much precedent for players his size stepping into significant roles in the NFL. Cole Beasley is the best example of a player with this frame having sustained success and Isaiah McKenzie has started to show promise, though it's worth noting that Austin is more athletic than both. Austin has now put himself in the discussion as a potential Day 2 selection.
