  • Eagles' Elijah Mitchell: Heads back to practice squad

Mitchell reverted to the Eagles' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log. Mitchell was heavily involved in Philadelphia's loss at Washington in Week 8, carrying the ball 11 times for 34 yards and adding four catches on six targets for three yards. Starter Saquon Barkley was in and out of Sunday's contest with a back injury, and he was less effective than Mitchell as a rusher. Mitchell can be elevated from the practice squad once more this season before the Eagles would have to sign him to the active roster for him to be allowed to suit up for regular-season games.

  • Eagles' Elijah Mitchell: Gets 15 touches in Week 8 loss

Mitchell rushed 11 times for 34 yards and caught four of six targets for three yards in Sunday's 27-10 loss to the Commanders. Mitchell led the team in rushing yards while notching two fewer carries than Saquon Barkley, who was in and out of the game while playing through a back injury. Jaydon Blue, whom the Eagles signed from their practice squad Wednesday, contributed primarily as a special-teams kickoff returner while notching one catch and no carries. Mitchell has been elevated from the practice squad for each of Philadelphia's last two games, so he'll be eligible for one more elevation in Week 9 against the Giants before the Eagles have to sign him to the active roster to keep using him on gamedays.

  • Eagles' Elijah Mitchell: Reverts to practice squad

Mitchell reverted to the Eagles' practice squad Tuesday, per the NFL's transaction log. Mitchell is a prime candidate for promotion or elevation to the active roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Commanders. The running back played 14 offensive snaps in the Eagles' Week 7 loss to the Cowboys, logging three carries for 11 yards in the contest. With Saquon Barkley (hamstring) banged up and Dameon Pierce (undisclosed) moved to IR, Mitchell could be the team's No. 2 rusher for Week 8 behind Jaydon Blue.

  • Eagles' Elijah Mitchell: Elevated from practice squad

The Eagles elevated Mitchell from the practice squad ahead of Monday night's game against Dallas. Mitchell figures to operate as the RB3 behind Saquon Barkley (hamstring) and Dameon Pierce. Mitchell has appeared in just one regular-season game since the 2023 season.

  • Elijah Mitchell: Inks deal with Philadelphia

Mitchell was signed to the Eagles' practice squad Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Mitchell will return to Philadelphia after reaching an injury settlement with the team in August. The running back appears to have fully recovered from his undisclosed injury, and he'll now have a chance to prove himself and potentially earn an elevation to the active roster down the road. The Eagles waived both Jaydon Blue and Carson Steele (shoulder) on Tuesday, and Saquon Barkley (hamstring) is still less than 100 percent, so Dameon Pierce is currently their only healthy option in the backfield. If Mitchell can get up to speed in time, there is a good chance he will be elevated to play in Monday night's matchup with the Cowboys.

  • Elijah Mitchell: Let go from IR by Philadelphia

The Eagles released Mitchell (undisclosed) from injured reserve with an injury settlement Tuesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Mitchell was originally slated to miss the entire 2026 season after being placed on the Eagles' IR on Monday. However, with the injury settlement, the 2021 sixth-rounder will have the opportunity to sign with a team once he's fully healthy. Mitchell's lone appearance in the 2025 regular season with the Chiefs was against the Broncos in Week 7, when he failed to haul in his lone target while playing seven snaps on offense.

  • Eagles' Elijah Mitchell: Moved to IR

The Eagles placed Mitchell (undisclosed) on injured reserve Monday. Mitchell signed with the Eagles in early June with designs on having him compete for a complementary role in the Eagles' backfield. Unfortunately, it appears Mitchell has suffered a significant setback, and the 28-year-old will spend the entirety of the 2026 season on injured reserve unless he is waived with an injury settlement. The Eagles signed running back Ja'Quinden Jackson in a corresponding move.

  • Eagles' Elijah Mitchell: Headed to Philly

The Eagles signed Mitchell on Tuesday. After trying out during Philadelphia's rookie camp earlier this spring, per Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia, Mitchell is getting a bigger chance as offseason workouts resume. There could be room for legitimate competition in the Eagles' backfield behind Saquon Barkley, as both Tank Bigsby and 2024 fourth-rounder Will Shipley are relatively unproven.

  • Elijah Mitchell: Dropped by New England

The Patriots released Mitchell on Tuesday, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports. The 27-year-old running back from Louisiana inked a reserve/future contract with New England in early February, but it now appears the team has decided to move in another direction. Mitchell's last in-game action came with the Chiefs in 2025, when he appeared in one contest and failed to catch his lone target across seven offensive snaps.

  • Elijah Mitchell: Released by New England

The Patriots released Mitchell from the practice squad Wednesday. Mitchell signed to New England's practice squad in late December as a possible depth option for TreVeyon Henderson, who was questionable to play with a concussion. The five-year pro from Louisiana is four years removed from his best season in 2021, when he rushed the ball 207 times for 963 yards and five touchdowns, while also catching the ball 19 times for 137 yards and one touchdown.

  • Elijah Mitchell: Signs with New England

The Patriots signed Mitchell to the practice squad Tuesday. Mitchell was waived by the Chiefs last Saturday and has already found a new home. The running back has a chance to be elevated for Week 17 against the Jets due to the Patriots' starting back TreVeyon Henderson (concussion) potentially not clearing the league's five-step concussion protocol in time for Sunday's game.

  • Chiefs' Elijah Mitchell: Not playing Week 14

Mitchell (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Texans. Mitchell will be a healthy scratch for a third consecutive game, as the Chiefs will go with a three-man backfield Sunday in Kareem Hunt, Isiah Pacheco and Brashard Smith. Mitchell's next opportunity to play is Week 15 against the Chargers on Sunday, Dec. 14, though he's unlikely to play unless Hunt, Pacheco or Smith miss time.

  • Chiefs' Elijah Mitchell: Healthy scratch again

Mitchell (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against the Cowboys, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. Mitchell got a chance to make his season debut Week 11 versus Denver but reverted to being a healthy scratch Week 12. With Isiah Pacheco now back in action, Mitchell quietly falls back to No. 4 on Kansas City's backfield depth chart. In his lone regular-season appearance thus far, Mitchell played seven offensive snaps and failed to haul in his only target.

  • Chiefs' Elijah Mitchell: Inactive Sunday

Mitchell (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's matchup with the Colts, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. The running back made his season debut last Sunday against the Broncos but only played on seven of 70 offensive snaps. Mitchell is a healthy scratch even with Isiah Pacheco still out due to a knee issue. Kareem Hunt and Brashard Smith got most of Kansas City's offensive snaps at the running back spot a week ago.

  • Chiefs' Elijah Mitchell: Active versus Denver

Mitchell is active for Sunday's game against the Broncos, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. With Isiah Pacheco (knee) inactive, Brashard Smith and Mitchell are on hand to work behind Kareem Hunt on Sunday. Mitchell is thus slated to make his season debut with the Chiefs, while Clyde Edwards-Helaire was not elevated from the team's practice squad ahead of Week 11 action.

  • Chiefs' Elijah Mitchell: Inactive Sunday

Mitchell is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bills, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. With Mitchell a healthy scratch and Isiah Pacheco (knee) having previously been ruled out, look for Kareem Hunt and Brashard Smith to lead the Chiefs' Week 9 backfield, with practice squad elevation Clyde Edwards-Helaire also available to mix in.

  • Chiefs' Elijah Mitchell: Healthy scratch for Week 4

Mitchell (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Ravens, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. Mitchell will be a healthy scratch for a fourth consecutive game, and his next chance to make his 2025 regular-season debut comes Week 5 against the Jaguars on Monday, Oct. 6. Isiah Pacheco, Kareem Hunt and rookie seventh-rounder Brashard Smith will be Kansas City's three active running backs for Sunday's contest.

  • Chiefs' Elijah Mitchell: Won't play versus Eagles

Mitchell (coach's decision) has been ruled out for Kansas City's matchup versus the Eagles on Sunday. Mitchell will now be a healthy scratch for the second straight week as the Chiefs will once again only use three running backs. His next chance to play will be the team's Week 3 matchup versus the Giants next Sunday.

  • Chiefs' Elijah Mitchell: Getting some first-team looks

Mitchell, Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt got first-team snaps Thursday, along with a "sprinkling" of rookie Brashard Smith, according to Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. It can perhaps be taken as a good sign for Mitchell that he's getting first-team reps, which might instead be cornered by Pacheco and Hunt. Mitchell has a one-year, $2.5 million contract that includes $1.35 million guaranteed, while Hunt has a one-year, $1.5 million deal with $850,000 guaranteed. Pacheco is presumably a lock to make the roster, but everything else is up for grabs in the Kansas City backfield between Hunt, Mitchell, Smith and UDFA Elijah Young. For Mitchell, the biggest challenge is staying healthy, as he played just 16 games over his final three seasons in San Francisco after running for 963 yards as a rookie in 2021. He's apparently made a full recovery from the torn hamstring that put him on injured reserve for all of last season, coming back healthy with a new team and a real shot to compete for touches.

  • Chiefs' Elijah Mitchell: Finds new home in Kansas City

The Chiefs are in line to sign Mitchell (hamstring) to a one-year contract worth up to $3.5 million, Tommy Call III of USA Today reports. Mitchell missed his entire 2024 campaign with San Francisco after undergoing hamstring surgery last August, but he projects to be ready for the start of offseason activities with his new club. Across four years with the 49ers, the oft-injured Mitchell managed to suit up for only 27 of a possible 68 regular-season games, but he now finds an intriguing landing spot with a solid potential ceiling, should he manage to stay healthy and put his trademark speed to use. Kareem Hunt is a pending unrestricted free agent for the Chiefs, but Isiah Pacheco has one year remaining on his rookie deal, leaving Mitchell in likely position to handle a depth role.
