Suter was not qualified by the Blackhawks on Monday and will become a free agent, Mark Lazerus of The Athletic reports.

It's a bit surprising to see Chicago not qualify Suter after he scored 14 goals and 27 points while averaging over 16 minutes of ice time as a rookie last season. However, this appears to be a cap-space issue. According to Scott Powers of the Athletic, Suter and the Blackhawks were "far off" in contract discussions and the team didn't want to go to arbitration with the 25-year-old center. Assuming the two sides don't agree to an extension before Wednesday, Suter will have plenty of interested teams this offseason.
