Rory McIlroy went out on the first nine in a not-very-good 1-over 36. He was one of the only golfers in the top 30 to not be under par for the first nine holes.

He stood on the seventh tee down three to Henrik Stenson and Rickie Fowler, made birdie there, then dropped a sweet little 32 on the back nine to beat Phil Mickelson by one stroke at the 2014 PGA Championship.

Youngest to Win 4th Major
Golfer Age
Tiger Woods 24 years, 6 months, 23 days
Jack Nicklaus 25 years, 2 months, 21 days
Rory McIlroy 25 years, 3 months, 6 days

It was epic. It was historic. It was everything you want from a major.

"It's been just incredible," McIlroy told CBS Sports afterwards. "I didn't think in my wildest dreams I'd have a summer like this."

But it certainly wasn't simple.

No, it was anything but simple.

There was a wild finish in the dark as McIlroy and playing partner Bernd Wiesberger finished as a foursome (basically) with the pairing ahead of them, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler.

Here's a glimpse:

McIlroy said he never thought about finishing Monday.

"I wanted to win this thing and get out of here," he said.

McIlroy took the lead on the 16th hole when Mickelson made bogey then went two up on No. 17 with a 10-foot birdie.

And then he almost drove it in the water on No. 18 as, get this, Mickelson and Fowler paused to let him play through (sort of, with) them on the way in.

Here's a look at how close it was:

McIlroy made a par pretty much completely in the dark as Mickelson and Fowler looked on.

Then he punctuated the Valhalla major with a lusty fistpump towards caddie JP Alexander and walked away with the fourth major of his career.

He joins Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only two golfers of the modern era to win four majors before the age of 26. An incredible threesome.

It was something nobody in attendance (or watching) will ever forget.
