Rangers starting pitcher Matt Harrison had surgery just over a week ago to repair a herniated disk in his back. But on Wednesday, he needed another surgery, the club told reporters (via MLB.com beat writer T.R. Sullivan). Harrison reportedly felt some discomfort earlier this week and had an MRI, which revealed more herniation of the disk.
And now for the worse news. Harrison will miss at least three months of the season from Wednesday. Even if there are no further setbacks, Harrison won't be back until early August.
Harrison, 27, had a rough start to the 2013 season (0-2, 8.44 ERA in two starts) but was 18-11 with a 3.29 ERA last season, making his first All-Star game.
The Rangers currently have a rotation of Yu Darvish, Derek Holland, Alexi Ogando, Nick Tepesch and Justin Grimm.
Keep in mind that Colby Lewis is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and could rejoin the rotation before Harrison, as he made a start in extended spring training on Monday. It lasted only an inning, but he's going to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday in advance of another start on Saturday. After that, he might be ready to go on a minor-league rehab stint.
