To no one's surprise, the Mets have exercised their $16-million option on third baseman David Wright for 2013 and their $5-million 2013 option on NL Cy Young front-runner R.A. Dickey. The news was first reported by FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi

This past season, Wright batted .306/.391/.492 with 21 homers and 41 doubles. He also played in 156 games and showed much improvement in the field. Dickey, meanwhile, won 20 games, posted a 2.73 ERA across 233 2/3 innings and led the NL in strikeouts.

The bigger matter is when/if the Mets will sign each player to a long-term contract extension. Wright will almost certainly command a deal in excess of $150 million, while Dickey's market is less certain given his age (37) and unique career curve. Even given the franchise's uncertain finances, it would be highly surprising if either player walked following the 2013 season.
