The Cincinnati Reds have optioned left-handed pitcher Tony Cingrani to Triple-A Louisville and promoted infielder Neftali Soto to the majors, the club announced Saturday.
The big news here is the demotion of Cingrani, which also points to Mike Leake remaining in the rotation when ace Johnny Cueto is activated off the disabled list Monday.
Cingrani, 23, is 2-0 with a 3.27 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 41 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched (six starts) this season. He was outstanding through three starts, but has a 5.40 ERA in his last three outings.
Leake, 25, is 3-2 with a 3.72 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 34 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings, but he has the experience edge, with 86 career starts under his belt.
Soto, 24, is hitting .269/.310/.388 with seven doubles, three homers and 16 RBI in 33 games for Triple-A Louisville. Barring injury, he is likely to only be with the club as extra bench depth Saturday and Sunday before Cueto is activated Monday.
