The Reds have placed pitcher Homer Bailey on the 15-day DL with a right elbow ligament sprain, retroactive to April 24, and recalled pitcher Carlos Contreras, the team announced Monday.

Bailey came off the disabled list April 18 and made two starts before landing back on the DL. He posted an 0-1 record with a 5.56 ERA and three strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings.

"It's a messy and unbelievably unfortunate both for him as an individual and for our ball club," manager Bryan Price said. "(Bailey) certainly won't be pitching here in the near future."

Contreras has posted a 1-0 record in six appearances with a 1.08 ERA for Triple-A Louisville.
