The Royals on Wednesday announced that they have acquired C/INF Tony Cruz from the Cardinals in exchange for minor-league infielder Jose Martinez.
Cruz, 29, has batted .220/.262/.310 (58 OPS+) across parts of five big-league seasons in St. Louis, where he primarily served as Yadier Molina's backup. In addition to catcher, Cruz has also spent time at first base and third base. The Cardinals' recent signing of catcher Brayan Pena rendered Cruz expendable.
As for Martinez, 19, he owns a line of .247/.305/.316 in 747 minor-league plate appearances. He's spent time at shortstop and second base, and he hasn't played above rookie ball.
