Mets starting pitcher Zack Wheeler has been shut down for the season due to what the team is referring to as regular stiffness in his right shoulder.
"He will not be making any more starts," Terry Collins told the New York Daily News. "After the last start his shoulder was a little stiff. We gave him a couple extra days, he was still stiff yesterday, so we are gonna shut him down."
The team has not involved their medical staff in the decision, and any treatment he has received has been part of his normal regimen. The Mets might be guilty of being overly cautious at this point after Matt Harvey's season came to an end with an elbow injury.
"With what happened with Matt, it's not time to take chances right now," Collins added.
Wheeler made 17 starts for the Mets, posting a 7-5 record and 3.42 ERA in 100 innings.
