Dodgers' Edwin Diaz: Will pitch during Mets series

Manager Dave Roberts stated Monday that he expects Diaz to pitching during Los Angeles' three-game series against the Mets, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Diaz has passed manual testing conducted by LA's training staff to rule out any injuries, and the team isn't concerned about the flamethrower's health despite the fact that he didn't feel quite right after Friday's appearance. Diaz has since noted that he's feeling "great", per Jack Harris of the California Post, and the expectation is that he'll be available to pitch during the team's three-game series against New York if there's a save chance.

Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that Diaz is being treated as "day-to-day" as the Dodgers look to determine why the reliever's velocity has been down to begin the season, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Over his first six appearances of the season, Diaz is averaging 95.8 miles per hour with his four-seam fastball. While that's a notable decline from the 97.2 mph he averaged during 2025 with the Mets, Sonja Chen of MLB.com notes that Diaz's velocity in past years has typically been down in the spring before picking up as the season progresses. Diaz has more or less acknowledged as much, and he hasn't indicated to the Dodgers that he's been pitching through any sort of physical concern. That being said, Roberts told Chen that he plans to "tread lightly" with Diaz's usage in the short term, so the right-hander won't necessarily be called upon for every save situation that arises. Despite the drop in velocity, Diaz was able to convert his first four save chances of the season before getting touched up for three earned runs on four hits and one walk over an inning during his most recent appearance Friday against the Rangers.

Manager Dave Roberts said Saturday that the Dodgers are monitoring Diaz's fastball velocity, Jack Harris of the California Post reports.
Diaz had a rough outing Friday, allowing three runs in the ninth inning against Texas to blow his first save since joining the Dodgers. More notably, his fastball velocity is averaging 95.9 mph in the early going, which is over a tick below his 97.3-mph average velocity last season. Diaz wasn't available to pitch Saturday after throwing 23 pitches Friday, and Roberts didn't commit to having him available Sunday either, saying, "We'll see how he feels tomorrow," per Harris. However, Roberts also noted that Diaz's velocity isn't much of a concern while pointing out that it's usually lower early in the campaign, so fantasy managers probably have no need to panic.

Diaz (1-0) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over one inning, earning the win after taking a blown save versus the Rangers on Friday.
Diaz was sloppy in the ninth despite throwing 19 of 23 pitches for strikes. He allowed a two-run home run to Evan Carter and an RBI single to Ezequiel Duran, which tied the game. Max Muncy was the hero for the Dodgers, walking it off with a solo shot to give Diaz the win despite his poor showing. Over six innings this season, Diaz has allowed four runs with a 10:4 K:BB, but he's also converted four of five save chances. As long as outings like this don't become the norm, his role as closer is safe.

Diaz kept the Blue Jays off the board despite yielding two baserunners in the ninth, ending the night by striking out Tyler Heineman. It's been a strong start to the season for Diaz, who has collected a save in four of five outings, allowing just one run while striking out eight over five innings. He's well on his way to eclipsing his save total from 2025 (28) when he was a member of the Mets.

The Dodgers took their first lead with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving Diaz an opportunity for his second save. The star reliever wasn't overpowering -- all three of the outs he recorded came on flyouts, and Diaz didn't get any swinging strikes -- but he was nonetheless able to slam the door shut on 10 pitches. With Los Angeles humming to a 3-0 start and Diaz the team's clear-cut closer, he's a logical pick to be among MLB's save leaders throughout the campaign.

Diaz walked one and struck out two over a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Friday's 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
Diaz was able to pitch around a one-out walk to Alek Thomas, who stole second but was stranded there. In the 2025 regular season, Diaz came up short of the 30-save mark for the second year in a row with the Mets, but his move to the Dodgers in the offseason gives him significant upside to get back to that threshold in 2026. While he is the clear closer to begin the year, any extended struggles by Diaz could see Alex Vesia or Tanner Scott work their way into the mix for ninth-inning work in what should be a deep bullpen for the two-time defending champions.

Diaz walked one batter and struck out two over a scoreless inning for Team Puerto Rico in an elimination loss to Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic on Saturday.
Though Diaz and Puerto Rico won't advance, the tournament went well for the All-Star closer, as he pitched three scoreless frames and posted a 7:1 K:BB. Of course, the last time Diaz pitched in the WBC (in 2023), he tore his right patellar tendon and missed the subsequent MLB campaign, so the Dodgers have to be pleased that their offseason acquisition is returning to the club in good health. Diaz should see plenty of save chances this season for a team that is once again expected to be among the best in baseball.
