German Marquez is the latest reminder that all Tommy John surgery returns are not alike. Marquez made it back from his 2023 surgery and made just one appearance for the Rockies before a stress reaction in his repaired elbow shut him down for the rest of the season. Marquez signed a two-year deal before the 2024 season, so he has one more year to pitch for the only club he has ever pitched for at the major league level, which has spanned 1,020 innings of work dating back to 2016. Unfortunately, he has worked just 24 innings over the past two seasons, and right now, we do not yet know how his rehab from his latest setback is going. Marquez has mostly been a streaming start option in his career, but with this being his final year of his contract, it would be expected the Rockies will do the smart thing for once and deal someone in his final year once Marquez can prove he is once again healthy. Marquez has pitched to a 15 percent K-BB with a 3.83 ERA and 1.19 WHIP on the road for his career, and teams will be interested in his stuff as we get closer to the trade deadline assuming Marquez is back to full strength.

The good news is that Marquez isn't dealing with any UCL damage, and the expectation is that he'll be ready to resume throwing in 6-to-8 weeks and have a normal offseason.     Marquez didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Mets, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks across four innings. He struck out three. Marquez made his first MLB start since April 26, 2023, after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He threw 70 pitches before being pulled. The 28-year-old managed to keep the Mets off the scoreboard until the fourth frame but was hit hard in the fourth. He allowed five of the first six batters he faced in the inning to reach safely, including a two-run home run to Pete Alonso. Marquez walked Francisco Lindor with the bases loaded for the Mets' third run but was able to avoid further damage by getting Brandon Nimmo to ground out with the bases loaded and end the inning. Marquez has previously been a reliable fantasy option, but fantasy managers should proceed with caution considering the right-hander's lengthy absence. The Rockies will play six consecutive games at Coors Field coming out of the All-Star break, though it's unclear when exactly Marquez will pitch.

Marquez wrapped up his seven-start minor-league rehab assignment on a high note Tuesday, when he struck out eight and allowed three runs on four hits and no walks over five innings for Double-A Hartford. Marquez will likely be capped at around 75 to 90 pitches in his 2024 Rockies debut, but he shouldn't face any major workload restrictions in his subsequent outings. During his last full season in the big leagues in 2022, Marquez turned in a 4.95 ERA and 1.37 WHIP while striking out 150 batters in 181.2 innings, so fantasy managers outside of deep leagues are probably best off taking a wait-and-see approach with the right-hander rather than immediately scooping him up off the waiver wire.
