• Phillies' Andrew Painter: Likely to make Opening Day rotation

  Painter threw two clean innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. He struck out one. Painter's spring debut went swimmingly -- he fired 14 of his 20 pitches for strikes and his four-seam fastball reached 97 mph on six occasions. With Zack Wheeler (shoulder) expected to start the new campaign on the injured list, the Phillies have an eye toward including Painter in the Opening Day rotation, per Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. While he turned in a lackluster 5.40 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over 106.2 innings at Triple-A Lehigh Valley a year ago, the 22-year-old right-hander remains one of Philadelphia's top prospects and has an opportunity to overtake Taijuan Walker as the club's No. 5 starter even when Wheeler rejoins the rotation.

Painter so far has been working on changing his arm angle to match where it was prior to his Tommy John surgery. This will be his first spring training start since 2023.   The Phillies hope Painter will be part of their Opening Day rotation, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Cristopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo and Aaron Nola are locked into the Opening Day rotation, but there's a good chance the Phillies will have two open spots if Zack Wheeler (shoulder) isn't quite ready. Taijuan Walker and Painter are considered the favorites to fill those last two slots. Painter didn't have great results in 2025 in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, holding a 5.26 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 123:47 K:BB over 118 innings covering 26 starts between Single-A Clearwater and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. However, the top prospect's stuff was intact, and the fact that he was able to get to nearly 120 innings was encouraging. Painter was added to the 40-man roster this offseason, and while he will have to pitch well in spring training, he stands a good chance of heading north with the big club.

The 2021 first-round pick returned to action last season for the first time since 2022 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and he endured some struggles at Lehigh Valley with a 5.40 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 111:46 K:BB over 106.2 innings. Painter's workload was encouraging, however, and his standing as Philadelphia's top pitching prospect lines him up to potentially make his MLB debut in 2026.

• Phillies' Andrew Painter: Best start in months

  Painter struck out six over five scoreless innings Wednesday while allowing three hits and zero walks for Triple-A Lehigh Valley against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. This was arguably Painter's best start of the season, which isn't saying much, as he's thrown two quality starts on the year and this was his lone instance with five-plus innings, zero runs and zero walks. Indeed, he'd given up 12 earned runs on 19 hits and six walks over his last two starts, so it's hard to say with confidence that Painter has righted the ship. Painter sat 94-97 mph with his four-seamer (touched 98 mph) in this start, with his changeup, slider and curveball each getting whiffs over 35 percent of the time. The 22-year-old righty has a 5.35 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and a 105:44 K:BB in 102.2 innings for the IronPigs.

• Phillies' Andrew Painter: Bounces back at Triple-A

  Painter struck out six batters and allowed one hit and two walks over five scoreless innings in his rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Painter had permitted 10 earned runs in nine innings over his first two starts of June, but he took an encouraging step forward Sunday, facing just one batter more than the minimum while needing 72 pitches to record 15 outs. The right-hander now holds a 4.35 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 35:13 K:BB over 31 innings in his seven starts since joining Lehigh Valley after completing a four-start rehab assignment in the Florida State League. Painter's big-league debut was pushed back after he underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2023, but assuming he can build on Sunday's outing and continue to overwhelm Triple-A hitters, he should be ready to slot into the Philadelphia rotation at some point shortly after the All-Star break.

• Phillies' Andrew Painter: Unlikely to debut in first half

  Phillies manager Rob Thomson indicated recently that it's unlikely Painter will make his major-league debut prior to the All-Star break, Paul Casella of MLB.com reports. Thomson also hinted that the club plans to give Painter some rest around the All-Star break as part of his workload management in his first season back in action following Tommy John surgery. The right-hander might make his MLB debut shortly after that during the Phillies' homestand that runs from July 18 to 23, although that's not written in ink. Painter's last four starts have been at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and he's posted a 2.65 ERA and 20:7 K:BB over 17 innings in those outings. The 22-year-old went five frames in his last start and is slated to pitch into the sixth inning his next time on the bump.

Painter topped out at four frames and had a high of 49 pitches at Clearwater and will continue to stretch out with Lehigh Valley. Painter stayed back in Florida at the conclusion of big-league spring training and has been throwing simulated games of late, but he'll now get a chance to test himself in an uncontrolled setting when he reports to the Phillies' Single-A affiliate. The Phillies anticipate Painter being ready to join the big-league rotation at some point this summer, but he'll first need to get some reps at the minor-league level before receiving a call-up. He'll likely be limited to around two innings Friday and will gradually increase his pitch count in subsequent outings while also eventually moving on to Double-A Reading and/or Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

The 21-year-old threw 15.2 frames in the Arizona Fall League last year, posting a 2.30 ERA and 18:4 K:BB, and he impressed his pitching coach, Caleb Cotham, in the process with a refined pitch mix that Painter is expected to carry forward into 2025. Painter is also reportedly throwing bullpens at a lower intensity this spring compared to past camps as he prepares to make his major-league debut this summer. He last pitched three scoreless and hitless frames Tuesday, and could make a final AFL appearance this week. Prior to the fall league, Painter hadn't pitched since 2022, yet he leads qualified AFL pitchers in ERA and WHIP. He has used all four of his pitches this fall, with his four-seam fastball up to 99 mph and averaging 97 mph, per Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com. His stuff is all the way back as is his control, which was part of what made Painter such a special prospect before Tommy John surgery. It's unclear if the Phillies will ease Painter into action at Triple-A or give him a shot to win a job in the big-league rotation out of spring training. He threw 103.2 innings in 2022 and will finish with just under 20 innings this fall, so a potentially capped, unpredictable workload is the main drawback with the 21-year-old righty in redraft leagues.

He should have time to be fully recovered and a full-go for spring training. Painter threw 103.2 innings in 2022 and it's tough to predict how many innings he'll throw next season after not pitching at all for two years. However, if he makes a full recovery, he won't need much more developmental time in the minors.

  The Phillies announced Wednesday that Painter (elbow) has been recommended for Tommy John surgery. Painter is set to meet with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Monday for a surgical consultation, and assuming ElAttrache agrees with the assessment made by the Phillies' medical staff, the young right-hander will presumably have his Tommy John surgery performed at some point later this month. The 20-year-old was first diagnosed with a partially torn UCL in his right elbow back in early March. While he appeared to be making strides in his recovery at some points during his rehab, he had a setback while facing hitters earlier this month and looks like he'll ultimately require surgery. An operation would prevent the top prospect from pitching at least until late 2024 and perhaps not until 2025.
