Chandler (forearm) threw a side session Friday, MLB.com reports. Despite the injury being termed a forearm issue, the Pirates insisted that Chandler was placed on the 7-day injured list as a precaution. The team's description of the issue appears to be accurate, however, as his side session came only five days after being placed on the injured list and the expectation is that he will return to game action soon.... Pirates' Bubba Chandler: Dealing with forearm injury
Chandler was placed on Double-A Altoona's 7-day injured list Sunday with a forearm injury, though Pirates assistant GM Steve Sanders labeled the move as precautionary, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. The 21-year-old is one of the organization's top prospects and has struggled early in 2024 with a 5.84 ERA and 30:18 K:BB across 24.2 innings. Chandler will be sidelined for at least the next week but is without an official timeline for his return.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Bubba Chandler: Treading water at Double-A
Chandler has a 4.13 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 29 strikeouts and 13 walks in 24 innings across seven appearances for Double-A Altoona. Chandler has a 3.72 FIP and 3.70 xFIP, so he's been perfectly fine in a return to Double-A after making one start there to close 2023. The former two-way prospect has logged four-plus innings in three of his seven outings, as he has struggled to be efficient thus far (13 percent walk rate). He is the fifth-youngest pitcher with 20-plus innings at Double-A and turns 22 in September.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Bubba Chandler: Turns corner at High-A
Chandler has a 2.57 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 49 strikeouts in 49 innings over his last nine starts for High-A Greensboro. Chandler got an 11-day gap between starts in early-July and just took 10 days in between his Aug. 22 start and his most recent start Sept. 2, as Pittsburgh carefully monitors the former two-way player's first season focusing solely on pitching. The hard-throwing 20-year-old righty has a very high ceiling and has turned a corner at High-A after logging a 6.63 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in his first 57 innings this season.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Bubba Chandler: Focusing on pitching in 2023
Chandler was told by the Pirates on Monday that he will work exclusively as a pitcher this year, Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com reports. Chandler was selected as a two-way player in the third round of the 2021 MLB Draft, but the Pirates want him to focus solely on his mound work in 2023 after he struggled to a .184/.284/.290 batting line in 32 games (88 plate appearances) last summer at Low-A Bradenton. He posted a 2.61 ERA with 60 strikeouts in 41.1 innings between Bradenton and the rookie-level Florida Coast League.... See More ... See Less

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG36M agoBen Cherington believes the Pirates are a better club than last year. It's tough to understand where he's coming from on that. My column: https://t.co/2HLKjUzfyh

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG12H agoPirates are 1 of only 4 MLB teams with 1 or no players worth 1.0 fWAR or more (Connor Joe, 1.0). CWS, CIN and MIA the others. Also, NL Central has the fewest 1.0+ fWAR players in MLB. Was curious how Pirates stacked up with this stuff and did some research. https://t.co/LZ27zvNz8s

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG12H agoPirates general manager Ben Cherington spent $30.95 million this offseason to sign/acquire the following six players: Rowdy Tellez, Aroldis Chapman, Marco Gonzales, Martin Perez, Yasmani Grandal and Michael A. Taylor. Their collective fWAR: -0.8.

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf15H ago“I've got to be an example, even when it's not going good for me." Rowdy Tellez’s best game of the season wasn’t enough to get the Pirates the win Sunday in Toronto, but it could potentially get their first baseman going. https://t.co/btDKHcAuVu

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG17H agoPirates fall, 5-4. Solid game from Rowdy Tellez: 3 hits, 4 RBI. But they go 3 for 16 and leave 13. Drop 2 of 3 in Toronto. Pirates are 27-32 after 59 G. They were 32-27 after 59 G in '23. Priester: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 K, 1 WP

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf17H agoThat's game. Blue Jays 5, Pirates 4. Huge afternoon for Rowdy Tellez, but Quinn Priester was tagged for four runs over 4 2/3 innings with a lot of hard contact. Pirates lose the series. They are 27-32.

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG18H agoAnother wasted opportunity. Chad Green walks two to lead off the 6th. Connor Joe and Oneil Cruz strike out, the latter on a fastball right down broadway. Ke'Bryan Hayes' laser to left is caught. Pirates have stranded 11 today. They're 2 for 13 w/RISP.
