  • Rays' Edwin Uceta: Earns fifth save

Uceta allowed a hit and struck out one batter in a scoreless inning while earning a save against Boston on Friday. Uceta worked around a one-out single by Vaughn Grissom in the ninth inning to preserve the 2-1 win. It was Uceta's fifth save of the year, with all of them coming during his last 12 appearances. During that span, he's converted each of his five save chances while tallying three holds alongside a 2.77 ERA. For the season, Uceta has produced a terrific 1.51 ERA and 57:8 K:BB through 41.2 innings.

  • Rays' Edwin Uceta: Converts adventurous save

Uceta allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk while striking out one in the ninth inning to earn the save Sunday against the Blue Jays. Uceta was called upon to protect a two-run lead and allowed the tying run to reach third base with only one out. However, he recorded the final two outs without allowing the ball out of the infield to record his fourth save of the season. Uceta remains one of the most skilled pitchers in the Rays' bullpen, but a different reliever has now converted each of the team's four save chances.

  • Rays' Edwin Uceta: Earns third save in return

Uceta picked up the save in Friday's 3-1 victory over Cleveland, pitching 1.2 perfect innings with two strikeouts. Activated in advance of Friday's contest after serving a two-game suspension for intentionally throwing at the Phillies' Nick Castellanos on Tuesday, Uceta immediately stepped back into a high-leverage spot for Tampa Bay. He relieved Mason Montgomery with one out in the eighth after the latter allowed two hits to his three batters faced. Uceta efficiently retired five straight batters on only 18 pitches to lock down the win for Tampa Bay. He has now pitched to a 1.42 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 53:6 K:BB with three saves across 38 innings this season. The 26-year-old has been an elite reliever and is in the fluid mix for Tampa Bay save opportunities while Pete Fairbanks (lat) remains on the injured list.

  • Rays' Edwin Uceta: Suspension reduced to two games

Uceta's suspension was reduced Wednesday from three games to two games plus a fine, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The reliever's suspension comes after umpires determined he intentionally hit Nick Castellanos with a pitch during Tuesday's loss to Philadelphia. Uceta will begin serving the suspension Wednesday, but the Rays will now be able to add him to their bullpen a day earlier than initially expected.

  • Rays' Edwin Uceta: Serving three-game ban

Uceta won't appeal the three-game suspension issued by Major League Baseball and will begin serving the ban in Wednesday's series finale in Philadelphia, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Uceta was issued the suspension after he was ejected in the eighth inning of Tuesday's 9-4 loss to the Phillies when umpires determined that he intentionally hit Nick Castellanos with a pitch. In addition to sitting out Wednesday, Uceta will miss games Thursday and Friday in Cleveland before he's eligible to return for the penultimate game of the series Saturday.

  • Rays' Edwin Uceta: Suspended three games for HBP

Major League Baseball issued a three-game suspension to Uceta on Wednesday after he was ejected from Tuesday's game against the Phillies in the eighth inning when he hit Nick Castellanos with a pitch, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Rays manager Kevin Cash was also handed a one-game suspension. Uceta was charged with three runs while retiring just one batter before getting tossed from the contest after umpires determined he intentionally hit Castellanos with a pitch. Uceta is one of four different Rays relievers to pick up at least one save since Pete Fairbanks (lat) went on the injured list last month.

  • Rays' Edwin Uceta: Struggles in high-leverage spot

Uceta allowed three earned runs on four hits while recording only one out Tuesday against the Phillies. Uceta entered the game in the eighth inning with the score knotted at 4-4 and runners on second and third. He allowed three of the next four batters he faced to reach base on a double, single and homer, pushing the game out of reach for the Rays. Uceta avoided a loss because Richard Lovelady allowed the inherited runners on base, but it was still a disastrous outing. Even factoring in Tuesday's results, Uceta has a 1.62 ERA and 0.90 WHIP with a 27:3 K:BB in 16.2 innings since Aug. 1.

  • Rays' Edwin Uceta: Dominant in five-out save

Uceta notched his second save of the season Sunday against Baltimore, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out four in 1.2 innings. Called upon to preserve a 2-0 lead with two runners on and one out in the eighth, Uceta promptly struck out the next two batters to escape the jam. Uceta then worked around a single and a walk in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season. Save opportunities have been few and far between, but Uceta has been dominant since Pete Fairbanks (lat) landed on the injured list on Aug. 19, throwing 7.1 scoreless innings with a sparkling 15:2 K:BB during that stretch. The 26-year-old Uceta hasn't allowed a run since July 31 and owns an impressive 0.75 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 50:6 K:BB in 36 innings this season.

  • Rays' Edwin Uceta: Can't complete save chance

Uceta allowed two hits and struck out two across two-thirds of an inning Tuesday against the Twins. Uceta was called upon to protect a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning. He allowed consecutive singles to lead off the frame, but he struck out the next two batters he faced before being pulled in favor of Garrett Cleavinger. Despite losing out on a save chance, Uceta has still been excellent since Pete Fairbanks (lat) went on the injured list, racking up an 11:1 K:BB across 5.2 innings while recording a save, a hold and a win.

  • Rays' Edwin Uceta: Back down to Triple-A

The Rays optioned Uceta to Triple-A Durham on Saturday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. The move corresponds with right-hander Pete Fairbanks (arm) being reinstated from the 15-day injured list. Uceta made two big-league appearances after being called up from Triple-A Durham on Monday. Over that span, the right-hander threw four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out five.

  • Rays' Edwin Uceta: Reassigned to minors

The Rays reassigned Uceta to minor-league camp Monday. Uceta made 25 appearances at the big-league level over the past three seasons, but he never had much of a shot at winning a spot in the Rays' Opening Day bullpen after joining the club on a minor-league deal over the winter. He's expected to begin the campaign at Triple-A Durham.

  • Rays' Edwin Uceta: Gets minors deal

Uceta signed a minor-league deal with the Rays on Sunday, freelance reporter Francys Romero reports. The 25-year-old righty has been operating almost exclusively as a reliever since the pandemic, most recently seeing time at Triple-A for the Cubs and Mets this past season while also making a three-inning relief appearance in the majors for the Mets. He has a career 5.80 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and a 41:21 K:BB in 40.1 big-league innings.

  • Cubs' Edwin Uceta: Outrighted to Iowa

Uceta cleared waivers Friday and was sent outright to Triple-A Iowa, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The Cubs claimed Uceta off waivers from the Mets last week and immediately optioned him to Triple-A. He'll remain in the Cubs' farm system but lose his spot on the 40-man roster. The 25-year-old righty has surrendered six runs in 5.2 Triple-A innings this season.

  • Mets' Edwin Uceta: Rehabbing at Single-A

Uceta (knee) shifted his rehab assignment to Single-A St. Lucie on Sunday and tossed a perfect inning. Uceta needed just eight pitches to retire the side Sunday in the second appearance of his rehab assignment, which began in the rookie-level Florida Complex League on Wednesday. The right-hander has been on the shelf since late April and later underwent surgery in June to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. He'll eventually move his rehab to Triple-A Syracuse and will likely make a few appearances with the Mets' top affiliate before being reinstated from the 60-day injured list.

  • Mets' Edwin Uceta: Goes to 60-day IL

The Mets transferred Uceta (knee) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Monday. The transaction won't affect Uceta's timeline for rejoining the Mets, as he had already missed more than two months after landing on the 15-day IL on April 25 due to a left ankle sprain. He resumed a rehab assignment in early May, only to develop a left knee injury during that time before he was ultimately diagnosed with a torn meniscus, which he had surgically repaired June 9. The Mets likely won't have a precise timeline for Uceta's return from the IL until he resumes a throwing program.

  • Mets' Edwin Uceta: Brought up from Triple-A

The Mets recalled Uceta from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Uceta will take the roster spot of Jose Butto after Butto was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move. The right-hander provides the Mets with a middle-innings option out of the bullpen while he's with the club.

  • Pirates' Edwin Uceta: Designated for assignment

Uceta was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Tuesday. This move opens up a 40-man roster spot for Tyler Heineman, who is up to help fill in for Austin Hedges (concussion) behind the plate. Uceta had just been claimed off waivers from the Tigers on Sunday.

  • Tigers' Edwin Uceta: Moves to Triple-A

The Tigers optioned Uceta to Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. A waiver pickup from the Diamondbacks in January, Uceta was sent out to the minors after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and four walks over seven innings in Grapefruit League play during his first camp with the Tigers. The 25-year-old right-hander will probably need to show sharpened command and control at Triple-A for at least his first few appearances of the season before the Tigers entertain the idea of calling him up.
