  • Astros' Nick Allen: Shut down with back spasms

The Astros placed Allen (back) on the 10-day injured list Monday. Allen had been scheduled to start at shortstop in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Cardinals before being scratched from the lineup shortly before first pitch when he developed back spasms. The 27-year-old apparently didn't show meaningful improvement after resting up over the last couple of days, so Houston will keep him on the shelf for at least its entire seven-game week to give him extra time off to recover. The Astros called up Braden Shewmake from Triple-A Sugar Land to replace Allen as a utility infielder.

  • Astros' Shay Whitcomb: Enters Saturday's lineup

Whitcomb is starting at third base in Saturday's game against the Cardinals, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Whitcomb wasn't in the original lineup and the Astros never announced a change. However, he took the field with the rest of Houston's starters and is manning third base while hitting ninth. Nick Allen (undisclosed) was removed from the lineup.

  • Astros' Nick Allen: Making rare start

Allen will start at shortstop and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Mariners, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. With Jeremy Pena sitting out Sunday after exiting Saturday's 8-7 loss due to right knee tightness, Allen will enter the starting nine for just the second time all season. Allen is regarded as a slick fielder in the middle infield, but he's a career .214/.266/.272 hitter over 391 big-league regular-season games and won't carry much fantasy appeal if Pena winds up landing on the injured list.

  • Astros' Nick Allen: Secures $1.4 million deal

Allen agreed to a one-year, $1.4 million contract with the Astros on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The 27-year-old was traded from Atlanta to Houston earlier in the offseason and is now officially under contract for 2026. Allen played 135 games last season but with Jeremy Pena entrenched at shortstop, he'll work in a reserve role for the Astros after posting a .221/.284/.251 slash line in 2025.

  • Astros' Nick Allen: Dealt to Houston

Atlanta traded Allen to the Astros on Wednesday in exchange for Mauricio Dubon. Allen's strong defensive capabilities at shortstop allowed him to appear in 135 games in 2025, though he finished the year with just a .535 OPS over 416 plate appearances. Now that he's moving to Houston, where Jeremy Pena is locked in at shortstop, Allen is likely to operate in more of a bench role.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Out of lineup again Thursday

Allen is not in the lineup for Thursday's game in Philadelphia. It's the second straight day and third time over the last six contests that Allen has begun the game on the bench. Vidal Brujan has filled in at shortstop in all three of those tilts Allen has sat out, and Brujan will be at short and bat ninth again for Thursday's series opener.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Receiving afternoon off

Allen is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins. Vidal Brujan will cover shortstop for the matinee contest while Allen rests after starting in each of Atlanta's last three games. Allen is a dependable defender at shortstop, but he's gone 0-for-16 at the plate over his last seven starts to bring his season-long batting line down to .220/.285/.249 across 394 plate appearances.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Rare day off

Allen is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Mets. Allen's streak of 71 consecutive starts will end Saturday, as Vidal Brujan steps in to play shortstop and bat ninth. During that 71-game stretch, Allen slashed .211/.277/.240 with six doubles, 19 runs scored and nine RBI.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Rare extra-base hit in easy win

Allen went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Thursday's 7-1 win over the Mets. The 26-year-old infielder entered Thursday with just six extra-base hits this season, and the double was only his third extra-base knock in the month of June. Allen has carved out a steady role in 2025 -- he's started 64 of Atlanta's 73 games at shortstop -- but it hasn't yet translated to much fantasy appeal. He's hit eighth or ninth in the batting order in all but one of his outings, with Allen slashing just .230/.308/.268 with zero home runs, 13 RBI, 20 runs scored and six stolen bases through 211 plate appearances.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Back in action Sunday

Allen (hand) will start at shortstop and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Red Sox. Allen had been held out of the lineup for the past two days due to swelling on the knuckle of his right middle finger after he was hit by a pitch Thursday. The two days off appear to have provided sufficient time for Allen to heal up. The 26-year-old sports a .243/.308/.271 slash line in 48 games this season.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Absent from Saturday's lineup

Allen (hand) is not in Atlanta's starting lineup against Boston on Saturday. Allen will be out of the lineup for a second straight game after he was struck in the hand by a pitch in Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Phillies. Luke Williams will start at shortstop and bat ninth.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Removed from Thursday's contest

Allen exited Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Phillies with an apparent finger injury, 680 The Fan Atlanta reports. Allen had a pitch graze his hand in the third inning and was removed prior to Atlanta retaking the field in the fourth frame. The exact nature of the injury is unclear, but Luke Williams took over at shortstop.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Swipes sixth bag

Allen went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Red Sox. The 26-year-old shortstop swiped his sixth bag of the year, although it's taken him 10 attempts to get there. Allen has taken over the starting job for Atlanta primarily due to his defense -- he ranks in the 100th percentile in fielding range, per Statcast -- but he's providing a smidge of fantasy value in deeper formats with a .260/.324/.293 slash line, 10 RBI and 11 runs over 40 games.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Swipes fourth bag

Allen went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in Monday's win over the Blue Jays. The 26-year-old continues to make his case to be Atlanta's starting shortstop ahead of Orlando Arcia. Allen is batting .313 (10-for-32) through 10 games with four steals in four attempts, while Arcia is batting just .208 (5-for-24) in his seven outings.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Getting third consecutive start

Allen will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Blue Jays. The playing time at shortstop has tilted in favor of Allen lately, with the 26-year-old picking up his fourth start in five games after going 4-for-10 with a double, two runs and a stolen base over his prior three starts. The owner of a .213/.258/.287 slash line over parts of four seasons in the majors, Allen has provided most of his value on the defensive end during his career, but his improved production at the dish to begin his time in Atlanta looks to have at least temporarily vaulted him ahead of Orlando Arcia on the depth chart.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Remains on bench Wednesday

Allen is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies. Allen will hit the bench for the second game in a row after he ended a recent four-game run as Atlanta's starting shortstop on a down note by striking out in all three of his plate appearances in a 4-0 loss to the Marlins last Saturday. Orlando Arcia, meanwhile, went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored in his return to the lineup in Tuesday's 7-5 win and will be in the starting nine again Wednesday. Arcia's longer track record at the big-league level looks like it might be enough to keep him ahead of Allen on the depth chart for now, despite a poor start to the season.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Credits better eyesight for start

Allen is wearing goggles this season to correct an astigmatism which he said was a particular issue for him during night games, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. The 26-year-old came into the season with a career .209/.254/.283 slash line in the majors, but he's gone a surprising 5-for-18 (.278) to begin his Atlanta tenure. Allen's defense might be enough on its own for him to supplant Orlando Arcia on a permanent basis as the team's starting shortstop, but if he can supply more consistent offense it would make his case that much stronger.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Heads to bench after four starts

Allen is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins. He'll retreat to the bench after going 4-for-14 with a double, a walk, two stolen bases, an RBI and a run while starting at shortstop in each of the past four games. Allen had been expected to fill a utility role for Atlanta, but he appears to be getting a legitimate look as the everyday shortstop while Orlando Arcia has produced a .154/.154/.154 slash line through four games. Arcia is back in the lineup Sunday, but his hold on the starting job appears tenuous at best.

  • Braves' Nick Allen: Could be favorite for bench spot

Allen's defense at shortstop makes him the likeliest choice for a bench spot on Atlanta's initial 26-man roster, Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The team's starters rarely get a day or even an at-bat off, so Allen's lack of offense isn't a big impediment to him winning the job if manager Brian Snitker is purely looking for the best defensive option. Allen has shown stolen-base ability in the minors and posted some PCL-inflated slash line promise at Triple-A Las Vegas in the A's system, but his .209/.254/.283 career line over 760 big-league plate appearances offers an accurate portrait of his fantasy upside should the 26-year-old find his way into consistent playing time.
... See More ... See Less
  • Braves' Nick Allen: Traded to Atlanta

Atlanta acquired Allen from the Athletics on Monday in exchange for Jared Johnson. Allen, 26, has managed just a .209/.254/.283 batting line over parts of three seasons at the major-league level. He does have a reputation as a solid glove at shortstop, although he came in at negative-2 Outs Above Average during his 41 games with the Athletics in 2024. Allen offers an alternative at shortstop to Orlando Arcia, who is coming off a disappointing season, but ultimately Allen should be more of a depth option.
