Player Outlook
Stuart Fairchild opened 2023 on the major league roster and played regularly as a starter or late-game sub against left-handers over the first two-and-a-half months before being optioned to Triple-A Louisville with a .237 average over 64 games. He eventually finished the year in the majors, mostly as a fifth outfielder with stretches as a starter when injuries hit. With Spencer Steer expected to see most of his time in the outfield, a competition for fifth outfielder should play out during spring training. Fairchild brings above-average defense at all three outfield spots and speed, which gives him a leg up on the competition. That he doesn't have options remaining works in his favor, as Nick Martini still has one left. The Reds could option Martini, leaving Fairchild and Jose Barrero, whose primary position is shortstop, to compete for a job.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: On bench for Game 1

Fairchild is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with Atlanta. Fairchild had started in center field in both of Cincinnati's last two games, but he'll give way to Will Benson for the first game of the twin bill. Atlanta is bringing southpaw Chris Sale to the hill for the nightcap, so expect the right-handed-hitting Stuart Fairchild to pick up a start in the outfield while either or both of Benson and Jake Fraley -- both left-handed hitters -- head to the bench.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Logs steal in win

Fairchild started in center field and went 1-for-3 with a double, a hit-by-pitch, a run scored and a stolen base in Monday's 4-1 win over Atlanta. Fairchild, who normally is in the lineup against lefties, made a second consecutive start against a right-hander. The steal was his 13th on the season, and his sixth in the last 14 contests. The Reds' outfield has changed over recent days, as Fairchild, Rece Hinds and Austin Slater vie for playing time. That uncertainty is expected to change soon, as TJ Friedl (hamstring) is currently on a rehab assignment and could return for this weekend's series against the Rays.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Goes yard in loss

Fairchild went 1-for-3 with a solo home run during Sunday's 5-2 loss to Washington. Since being activated from the injured list July 19, Fairchild has started in two of the Reds' three games and has logged a pair of hits with a homer and a stolen base. The long ball came Sunday in the fifth inning off Jake Irvin and tied the game up at 2-2. On the year, Fairchild has a .227/.299/.364 slash line across 195 plate appearances.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Gets start Friday

Fairchild started in center field and went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 8-5 loss to the Nationals. Fairchild, who put himself in scoring position with a single and a steal, scored the Reds' first run. The theft was his career-high 12th stolen base. Fairchild was activated off the 10-day injured list earlier in the day and was available against Washington left-hander Patrick Corbin. He was an automatic starter against left-handers prior to his injury, but Cincinnati has since added Austin Slater and promoted Rece Hinds, which crowds the outfield's right-handed-hitting options against southpaws. Eventually, TJ Friedl (hamstring) will rejoin the team, perhaps next week, and Fairchild could get further squeezed for at-bats.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Activated from IL

The Reds reinstated Fairchild (back) from the 10-day injured list Friday. Fairchild had been eyeing a return after the All-Star break, and he'll hit that goal by being available for Cincinnati's series opener against the Nationals on Friday. The outfielder has been shelved since July 7 with a disc injury. Before the injury, the 28-year-old had been seeing regular work in center field in place of TJ Friedl (hamstring), but with Friedl likely back next week and both Rece Hinds and Austin Slater added to the mix since Fairchild landed on the IL, he may be limited to a short-side platoon role. Edwin Rios was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Expected back after All-Star break

Reds manager David Bell said Sunday that Fairchild (spine) is expected to return from the 10-day injured list following the All-Star break, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Fairchild was placed on the IL on Monday with a spinal disc injury, but he seems to be progressing well and tracking toward an abbreviated absence. He'll head to the Reds' complex in Arizona during the break to increase his baseball activities, and barring a setback, he should be ready to go when Cincinnati opens its second-half schedule Friday in Washington. Fairchild had been serving as the Reds' everyday center fielder in the absence of TJ Friedl (hamstring) prior to getting hurt, but he may be limited to a short-side platoon role upon his activation now that Cincinnati has added Rece Hinds and Austin Slater to its outfield mix in addition to getting Jake Fraley back from the family medical emergency list.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Placed on IL with back injury

The Reds placed Fairchild on the 10-day injured list Monday with a spine disc injury. Fairchild suffered the injury in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Tigers before sitting out the series finale Sunday. He will be eligible to return from the IL at any point after the All-Star break, but it's unclear whether he'll be ready to join the Reds by that time. Fairchild had been seeing regular reps in center field with TJ Friedl (hamstring) out, but Will Benson, Blake Dunn or the newly acquired Austin Slater could be in store for added playing time in center.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Getting starts against righties

Fairchild went 0-for-3 in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Tigers. Fairchild, who has a .401 OPS against right-handers this season, got the start against a righty Friday, after the Reds placed Jake Fraley on the family medical emergency list. With two lefty batters unavailable -- TJ Friedl (hamstring) and Fraley -- there have been more opportunities for Fairchild lately. For the season, he has a line of .226/.297/.351 with five home runs, 23 RBI and 11 stolen bases over 186 plate appearances.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Homers in win

Fairchild went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Yankees. Fairchild's fifth-inning home run turned out to be the game-winning knock. It was the fifth homer of the season and first in 30 games for Fairchild, who normally only plays against left-handed pitchers.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Fills in Tuesday

Fairchild started in center field and went 0-for-4 in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Pirates. Fairchild got the start in center field, as TJ Friedl (hamstring) was held out. With a left-hander on the mound for Pittsburgh, there's a chance Fairchild could have started as the DH. Friedl hurt himself during Monday's game when he made a diving catch and was removed from the contest. Reds manager David Bell told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com that Friedl could get back in the lineup this weekend. As such, Fairchild could get another start Wednesday before the Reds return home for a weekend series against Boston beginning Friday.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: In lineup against lefty

Fairchild batted leadoff and went 1-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Cubs. The Reds hadn't faced a left-handed starter the previous six games, which meant Fairchild was limited to a pinch-hit role over the last week. He singled in a run in the second inning and later stole his sixth base. Fairchild was eventually pinch hit for by Will Benson in the sixth inning when the Cubs brought a right-hander into the game. Fairchild is limited mostly to work against left-handers and is slashing .317/.411/.492 off them.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Homers in win

Fairchild went 1-for-3 with two walks, a solo home run and an additional run scored in Friday's 9-6 win over the Dodgers. Fairchild, who bopped one of three Cincinnati home runs, led off the fifth inning with his fourth long ball of the season. The outfielder is usually in the lineup against lefties, against whom he has a .949 OPS. Overall, he has an unappealing line of .226/.308/.387.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Pops homer Friday

Fairchild went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-3 loss to the Dodgers. Fairchild has driven in a run in each of his last three games. All three of his homers this season have come since April 30, though his playing time remains sporadic as a short-side platoon option all around the outfield. He's slashing a mediocre .213/.292/.350 with 11 RBI, 11 runs scored, five stolen bases and two doubles over 90 plate appearances in 2024.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Not starting Tuesday

Fairchild isn't in the Reds' lineup for Tuesday's game versus Arizona. Fairchild has turned in one hit -- a solo home run -- and walked three times across his last five games, and he'll now take a seat against Slade Cecconi and the D-backs. Jacob Hurtubise, Will Benson and Jake Fraley will start across the Reds' outfield Tuesday while Conner Capel serves as the DH.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Inside-the-park homer in win

Fairchild hit an inside-the-park home run in his lone at-bat during Friday's 4-2 win over the Giants. Fairchild pinch hit for Jake Fraley in the eighth inning and delivered an insurance run. It was Fairchild's second homer of the campaign, both of which have come in May. The outfielder is slashing .197/.260/.296 with eight RBI, eight runs scored, five stolen bases and a double through 78 plate appearances this season. Fairchild remains the Reds' fourth outfielder, primarily drawing into the lineup versus southpaws.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Swats homer in defeat

Fairchild went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 6-4 loss to the Padres. Fairchild took Enyel De Los Santos deep to center in the seventh to bring the Reds within two runs. It was his first home run of the year, first hit since April 22, and first RBI since he had two on April 20. The 28-year-old has not been overly productive when given the chance to be in the lineup, as he's slashing .200/.273/.267 with six RBI, seven runs, five steals and a 5:12 BB:K in 67 plate appearances.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Moves to leadoff

Fairchild batted leadoff and went 1-for-4 in Monday's 7-0 loss to Philadelphia. Fairchild hit atop the order for the second time this season. That job normally belongs to Jonathan India, but he's missed the last two games due to an illness. Fairchild is typically in the lineup against left-handers, against whom he has an .890 OPS. Against righties, he's 1-for-18 (.056).

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Logs fourth steal

Fairchild started in right field and went 0-for-3 with two walks, a stolen base and a run scored in Monday's 10-8 win over Milwaukee. Fairchild was originally scheduled to start in center field and bat fifth, but he was moved to right field and leadoff following a pregame injury to Jonathan India (leg), the Reds' normal leadoff hitter. The injury to India is not believed to be significant, so the leadoff role may be short-lived. Fairchild is 6-for-19 with three walks and four steals over seven games. He'll continue to see enhanced opportunities while TJ Friedl (wrist) remains idle.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: RBI, steal in comeback win

Fairchild went 2-for-2 with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Mets. Pinch hitting for designated hitter Nick Martini, Fairchild singled in a run, then stole second base as part of a double steal. He remained in the game at DH and later had a bunt single and scored on a sacrifice fly as part of the Reds' five-run eighth inning that erased New York's lead. The righty-swinging Fairchild, who is 5-for-13 with three steals through five games, will likely be part of Sunday's starting lineup against southpaw Sean Manaea.

  • Reds' Stuart Fairchild: Steals two bases

Fairchild went 1-for-3 with a run and two stolen bases in Monday's victory over the Phillies. Fairchild drew the start Monday against the left-handed Cristopher Sanchez as he's the weak side of a platoon with Jake Fraley currently. The 28-year-old managed to steal 10 bases over 244 plate appearances in 2023, so he is a speed threat whenever he plays. However, playing time could be difficult to come by in the Reds lineup due to the emergence of Will Benson and Nick Martini in the early going.
