Traditional scouts have several reasons to pan the idea of Logan Henderson making it as a big-league starter, but stat-line scouts will see a lot to get excited about. Henderson, a fourth-round pick in 2021, logged a 28.7 K-BB% and 0.88 WHIP in 46.1 innings at Double-A and a 20.4 K-BB% and 1.06 WHIP in 23.2 innings at Triple-A, and some of his lower-level statistics are even more impressive. However, he's an undersized (5-foot-11, 194 pounds) righty with a low-90s fastball and a below-average, seldom-used breaking ball. Henderson's plus changeup is his money maker, but it's quite rare for a fastball/changeup righty to make it as a starting pitcher. Henderson's fastball has good movement and he locates it well, which has thus far allowed him to get by on below-average velocity, but he'll have little margin for error whenever he gets his shot in the majors, as he's also a flyball-heavy pitcher. An oblique injury delayed Henderson's start to the 2024 season, but his 81.1 innings still marked a career high. Projection systems see a mid-rotation starter in Henderson, just know that there aren't many, if any, recent examples of successful starting pitchers with his combination of size, handedness and pitch mix.

  • Brewers' Logan Henderson: Dropped from big-league camp

    The Brewers optioned Henderson to Triple-A Nashville on Monday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Henderson has been excellent this spring, boasting an 8:1 K:BB over 5.2 scoreless innings. However, there's not room for him on the major-league roster at this point, so he'll join the Nashville rotation for now. Henderson has a chance to make some starts for the Brewers later on this season.

  • Brewers' Logan Henderson: Hits skid at Triple-A

    Henderson has a 5.49 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 22:6 K:BB in 19.2 innings through five starts for Triple-A Nashville. His first two starts went well, but Henderson has given up 11 earned runs in 9.2 innings over his last three starts. Armed with one of the best changeups in the minors, Henderson logged a 2.69 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 76:7 K:BB in 60.1 innings across 12 starts from May 31 through Aug. 15, with the bulk of that work coming for Double-A Biloxi. It's rare for a righty who is primarily fastball-changeup to find success as a starter, and even rarer when that pitcher is 5-foot-11 like Henderson. He has been trying to mix in a third-pitch cutter to little effect against Triple-A hitters after not needing a third pitch to get lower-level hitters out. Henderson's elite control should keep buying him opportunities to start, but in addition to needing a third pitch, he'll also need to show he can handle a starter's workload, as his 78.2 innings in 2023 still represent a career high.

    Henderson (oblique) was reinstated from High-A Wisconsin's 7-day injured list Friday and gave up one earned run on one hit and two walks while striking out three over 2.2 innings. Henderson's fastball sat around the 93-to-96 mile-per-hour range in his season debut for Wisconsin, and he mixed in a devastating changeup and a quality low-80s slider. He was a fringe prospect when he was sitting in the upper-80s and scraping 92 mph, but since adding a couple ticks to his fastball, Henderson could be poised to shoot up prospect rankings in 2024.

Henderson, a righty, exited a March 17 Spring Breakout game with left oblique discomfort. He displayed increased velocity this spring prior to the injury, but we will have to wait a few weeks before seeing if he can hold that mid-90s fastball velocity deep into starts. Last year, Henderson had a 2.75 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and a 106:26 K:BB in 78.2 innings as a command specialist with low-90s fastball and a plus changeup at Single-A.

Henderson began his outing by giving up a solo home run to Royals prospect Trevor Werner. Henderson then faced a second batter but was taken out of the game when the trainer went out to the mound after he threw a pitch.

    Henderson is being held back in extended spring training in an effort to manage his workload this season, Sam Dykstra of MLB.com reports. Henderson was limited to 13.2 innings in the lower minors late last season after undergoing elbow surgery in spring training, so he wasn't going to be able to pitch a full season this year anyway. He is currently pitching in extended spring training and will reportedly join a rotation at Single-A or High-A later this spring.
