Sawyer Gipson-Long suffered a groin strain at the beginning of spring training and then got Tommy John surgery in April. Then in early July, he needed hip surgery, so seemingly everything that could go Wong, did for the 26-year-old righty. It was the opposite in 2023, when Gipson-Long emerged from obscurity to shine in a brief taste of the big leagues. He posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 26 strikeouts across 20 innings of work in four starts with the big club to close 2023. The success wasn't expected, as he posted just a 5.45 ERA across 34.2 innings with Triple-A Toledo before his promotion, and Gipson-Long didn't have much prospect pedigree. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound hurler leans heavily on his four-seam and two-seam fastballs, which sat in the 92-94 mph range prior to his surgery. He could be ready to for a rehab assignment in the minors early this season before potentially rejoining the big-league rotation in June or July, if all goes well.
