Stokes was sent from the Pirates to the Brewers along with Jandel Gustave on Friday, with Samuel Escudero heading the other way. The 25-year-old outfielder made his major-league debut in May and appeared in eight games, but he failed to do much at the plate, going 2-for-18. He'll head to Triple-A Nashville to serve as organizational depth for now.... See More ... See Less

Pirates' Troy Stokes: Designated for assignment
Stokes was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Monday. Stokes appeared in eight games for the Pirates this year and hit .111 with two runs and two RBI. Ildemaro Vargas was claimed off waivers by the Pirates in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Troy Stokes: Moves back to bench
Stokes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Stokes had started the past three games, but he'll likely transition into a reserve role in the outfield after the Pirates recently added veteran Ben Gamel to the roster and returned Gregory Polanco from the COVID-19 injured list. Polanco, Bryan Reynolds and Ka'ai Tom will likely form the Pirates' everyday outfield for the time being.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Troy Stokes: On base three times Tuesday
Stokes went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a steal, two RBI and a run in Tuesday's 7-2 win over the Reds. Making his third straight start since his promotion, Stokes collected a lot of personal firsts after going 0-for-8 in his first two MLB games. The 25-year-old did show some power/speed potential in the minors, and the Pirates seem willing to give him a chance to show what he's capable of as they search for consistent outfield production next to Bryan Reynolds.... Pirates' Troy Stokes: Contract selected by Pittsburgh
Stokes had his contract selected by the Pirates on Sunday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports. The 25-year-old was removed from the 40-man roster in January but will rejoin the big-league club with the Pirates dealing with a rash of injuries. Stokes is looking to make his MLB debut and last played at Triple-A in 2019 with a .233/.341/.385 slash line, nine homers and 14 stolen bases in 95 games.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Troy Stokes: Moves to MiLB camp
The Pirates reassigned Stokes to their minor-league camp Wednesday. After Pittsburgh outrighted him off the 40-man roster in late January, Stokes faced long odds to break camp with the big club. He'll likely fill an everyday role in the outfield at Triple-A Indianapolis to begin the 2021 campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Troy Stokes: Clears waivers
Stokes cleared waivers Friday and was outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports. Stokes was claimed off waivers from the Tigers in mid-January but passed through without incident this time around. He'll still be in big-league camp but will be a non-roster invitee rather than a member of the 40-man roster. That makes his already long odds at earning an Opening Day roster spot even longer.... Pirates' Troy Stokes: Booted off 40-man roster
The Pirates designated Stokes for assignment Sunday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Two of the four prospects (Miguel Yajure and Roansy Contreras) the Pirates received in Sunday's trade that sent Jameson Taillon to the Yankees required placement on the 40-man roster, so Stokes was forced to cede his spot as a result. Stokes will now be exposed to waivers for the second time this month after the Pirates previously claimed him from the Tigers on Jan. 12.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Troy Stokes: Picked up by Pirates
Stokes was claimed off waivers by the Pirates on Tuesday. Stokes was claimed off waivers by the Tigers last offseason but missed the entire 2020 season due to hand surgery. He produced an above-average batting line at every stop until he reached Triple-A San Antonio in the Brewers' system in 2019, hitting a modest .233/.341/.385 in 95 games. He seemingly still has some development left to do, though he's wound up on a roster where playing time isn't hard to come by.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Troy Stokes: DFA'd by Detroit
Stokes was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Tuesday. The 24-year-old loses his spot on the 40-man roster with Detroit inking Robbie Grossman to a two-year, $10 million deal. Stokes missed the entirety of the 2020 campaign after undergoing hand surgery in July, but he should be ready for the start of spring training.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Troy Stokes: Heads to 45-day injured list
Stokes (hand) was recalled and placed on the 45-day injured list Friday. Stokes may not play at all this year after undergoing hand surgery in early July. If he does return, it will come quite late in the season.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Troy Stokes: Out after hand surgery
Stokes underwent surgery to address a broken bone in his hand and may not be able to play this season, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. The 24-year-old wasn't listed in the Tigers' initial 60-player roster pool, and the hand surgery provides the explanation for his absence. Stokes hasn't officially been ruled out for the season, but he'll only have a small window to return with the shortened schedule and seems unlikely to see the field before September.... See More ... Tigers' Troy Stokes: Dealing with hand injury
Stokes was withheld from the Tigers' initial 58-player pool list revealed Sunday due to a hand injury, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. The Tigers still have two spots left available in their 60-player pool, so Stokes could be added at some point once he moves past the injury. The outfielder joined the Detroit organization last September after hitting .233 with nine home runs and 14 steals over his 381 plate appearances with the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate at San Antonio in 2019.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Troy Stokes: Doesn't make initial player pool
Stokes was left off the Tigers' initial player pool list. Stokes is on the team's 40-man roster, so it's a bit of a surprise that he didn't make the team's initial 58-player list. The Tigers can still increase their player pool to 60, however. One of those two spots is expected to go to No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson once he signs a deal, but the second spot could be in play for Stokes.... See More ... See Less
