Mears is striking out too much -- he has fanned 19 times in 45 at-bats -- but the 21-year-old is also showing off his considerable power, tying for the Midwest League lead with five long balls. He smashed 17 homers in 242 at-bats with Low-A Lake Elsinore in 2021 and could make his way up to the Double-A level before long, especially if he's able to cut down on the strikeouts.

The Padres never provided an explanation for Mears' absence from the Low-A starting nine for nearly two weeks, but he was believed to have been inactive due to COVID-19-related protocols. Mears landed on the injured list with Low-A Lake Elsinore on Saturday due to a strained right shoulder, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Mears suffered the injury while diving for a ball in the outfield. Prior to the injury, the 2019 second-round pick hit a strong .258/.403/.542 with 13 homers and eight steals in 58 games, though his 36.0 percent strikeout rate is worryingly high.
