Spurs' Keldon Johnson: Solid showing off bench
Johnson scored 15 points (6-10 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 3-4 FT) while adding five rebounds, an assist and a steal in 22 minutes off the bench during Tuesday's 120-117 preseason loss to the Heat.
The 25-year-old forward's minutes have been in the low 20s for all three of his preseason appearances, and while other spots in the lineup remain unsettled, Johnson appears headed for a frontcourt role on the second unit to begin the 2024-25 campaign. He's averaged at least 15.0 points, 5.0 boards and 1.8 threes per game in each of the last three seasons, but that production came in a starting role that afforded him 29.5 minutes a game or more. With Jeremy Sochan apparently getting the first crack at the starting power forward job alongside Victor Wembanyama, Johnson's numbers figure to take a tumble.

Johnson had 20 points (9-13 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 1-2 FT), four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block across 23 minutes off the bench in Saturday's 126-120 preseason win over the Jazz.
Johnson was the best player for the Spurs in this game, and the forward continues to turn heads with his play as a reliable option off the bench. Johnson should operate as San Antonio's primary scoring option in the second unit once the regular season begins, and he should see enough minutes and have enough usage to be a valuable fantasy contributor across most formats.

Johnson (foot) said Sunday that he anticipates needing "about another week" before being able to consistently participate in basketball workouts, Jeff Garcia of KENS 5 San Antonio reports.
Johnson will sit out Sunday's game against the Pistons with a left foot sprain, marking his fourth consecutive absence to close out his 2023-24 campaign. After averaging a career-high 22.0 points in 2022-23, Johnson's average dropped down to 15.7 per game while he lost out on a handful of minutes as he shifted into a full-time bench role in mid-December. Though he provided a scoring lift to the second unit, Johnson didn't show much growth as a floor spacer in his fifth NBA season, hitting 34.6 percent of 5.3 three-point attempts per game.

Johnson had missed the Spurs' previous three games with a left foot sprain before being cleared to play Sunday. He appeared to aggravate the injury in the fourth quarter, as he immediately headed to the locker room before quickly being ruled out for the rest of the contest. The Spurs are eliminated from playoff contention heading into the final week of the regular season, so Johnson seems likely to miss time with San Antonio have little to gain by exposing him to further injury while he's less than 100 percent healthy.
