Super Bowl XLIX is long since over -- Sunday was our first without football for a long, sad stretch -- but the storylines still remain pretty fresh. Particularly when we're still learning details from highly-involved characters like Tom Brady and Josh McDaniels.

At TheMMQB.com, Peter King has an excellent oral-history style breakdown of some key moments from the Patriots quarterback and offensive coordinator, including the final New England touchdown, which came courtesy of Brady and McDaniels recognizing what worked on film and what worked earlier in the game.

We talk about Brady and Josh McDaniels in the latest Eye on Football Podcast embedded below (and remember to subscribe here):

Brady's fourth touchdown pass, an easy look to a wide-open Julian Edelman, was basically New England running back a previous miss where Brady gas-canned the ball over Edelman's head in the end zone, which Brady called "a mental mistake" because he "got indecisive."

But Brady knew the play worked and asked his offensive coordinator to dial it up one more time.

“After the last drive, I went to the sidelines and told Josh, ‘Josh, come back to that call. Please come back to that call.’ I knew even before the call came in what it was going to be," Brady said. "I knew how it was going to play out. Earl in same place. Simon in same spot. Only this time, they ended up blitzing, really a max blitz, creating one-on-one with Jules. He ran a great route. It’s a tough route to cover. The cornerback has no help. Looks like a slant. How do you not respect the coverage on the slant?"

You have to. And the result was Edelman getting wide open for a relatively easy score:

In so far as these come in the final two minutes and change of the Super Bowl.

The whole thing is worth a read, but some other cool notes from the duo include:

  • Film study! Brady says he "watched a lot of tape. A lot.” This includes the NFC Championship Game three times, the 2012 Seahawks-Patriots game three times and the Cowboys-Seahawks game from this year three times.
  • The Patriots planned all along to dink and dunk. Brady: "We were gonna be happy with a two-yard gain."
  • Shane Vereen was a critical x-factor heading into the game -- "We knew Shane needed to play a big role in the game," Brady said. Vereen ended up with 11 catches for 64 yards.
