Kawaan Baker: Exits New Orleans
The Saints waived Baker on Tuesday.
Baker was considered to have an outside shot at landing on New Orleans' 53-man roster but ultimately did not make the cut. Still, the Saints' seventh-round draft pick seems like a prime candidate to land on its practice squad should he ultimately go unclaimed on waivers.... See More ... See Less
Saints' Kawaan Baker: Working with starters
Baker operated with the starting offense during Wednesday's practice, John Hendrix of Sports Illustrated reports.
Baker apparently lined up opposite Marquez Callaway when the offense first took the field. Those two then rotated reps with Tre'Quan Smith, Deonte Harris, Lil'Jordan Humphrey and Chris Hogan. While it may be hard to predict how the pecking order at receiver will shake out with Michael Thomas (ankle) sidelined, Baker at least seems to be making a strong case for a roster spot ahead of the regular season.... Saints' Kawaan Baker: Opportunity getting bigger
Baker has an opportunity to see snaps early in the season with Michael Thomas (ankle) expected to miss at least the first four games, Katherine Terrell of The Athletic reports.
While Tre'Quan Smith is primed to hold down the No. 1 role in Thomas' absence, Marquez Callaway and Deonte Harris are the favorites to handle the No. 2 and 3 roles behind him. However, nothing is set in stone, and Baker easily could push Callaway and Harris for some sort of offensive role during training camp. In fact, if Baker can impress the coaching staff during this window of opportunity, it's not impossible that the South Alabama product is involved in the offense all season long.... See More ... Saints' Kawaan Baker: Learning multiple positions
The Saints intend for Baker to learn multiple receiver positions, Sam Shannon of the Saints' official site reports. "Baker is someone that has position flex ... you see him line up in the slot," head coach Sean Payton said during his post-draft press conference in May. "He's a high-IQ player for the receiver position. He's played in multiple positions. We will probably work him outside to begin with."
Payton was at least initially true to his word, considering Baker said June 10 that he had mostly been learning the outside "Z" receiver position up to that point, per Jeff Nowak of WWL Radio. While it's not clear whether or not the seventh-round rookie continued to specialize in a flanker role during the Saints' mid-June mandatory minicamp, we should learn more during training camp, where Baker will try to earn a role behind Michael Thomas and Tre'Quan Smith. Even if he doesn't, it bodes well for the South Alabama product that two different pairs of undrafted rookies have logged offensive snaps for New Orleans each of the past two seasons, so Baker could still make an impact in 2021 even if he doesn't initially make the 53-man roster out of training camp....
