  • Austin Watkins: Joins Browns' practice squad

Watkins signed with Cleveland's practice squad Wednesday, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports.

Watkins failed to make the roster despite an outstanding preseason, but he'll stick around in the Browns' organization. Watkins could be first in line among Cleveland's practice squad wide receivers should injuries strike the team's receiving corps.

  • Austin Watkins: Won't make team

Watkins was waived by the Browns on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

  • Browns' Austin Watkins: Pushing for roster spot

Watkins caught seven of 14 targets for a team-high 139 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's preseason game against the Eagles.

Watkins, a free agent added to the preseason roster days before the Browns set out for the Greenbriar to open training camp, has been the team's best receiver through three preseason games (including the Hall of Fame Game). The former USFL pass catcher has significantly outplayed both David Bell and Anthony Schwartz -- both draft picks -- and is getting reps with injuries to Marquise Goodwin (illness), Elijah Moore (ribs) and Jaelon Darden (leg). Added to that list is Jakeem Grant, who has yet to play in a game as he's being brought back slowly from an Achilles injury. There's still some time left in camp for roster tinkering, but Watkins' turn as the preseason star among the wideout group has improved his chances.

  • Browns' Austin Watkins: Making plays in preseason

Watkins caught six of eight targets for a team-high 71 yards in Friday's preseason game against the Commanders.

Watkins, who had a touchdown catch in last week's Hall of Fame Game, has made a quick impression after signing with the Browns just before the start of training camp. He was not on the field with starting quarterback Deshaun Watson, and he's competing with several receivers for a longshot bid to make the roster. However, with Elijah Moore (ribs) joining Marquise Goodwin (illness) and Jaelon Darden (leg) on the sidelines, there could be an opening if he continues to make plays.

Watkins was waived by the Buccaneers on Monday, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.

Watkins broke his foot in Saturday's preseason opener and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks, NIck Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

The injury is believed to have happened early in the game against the Chiefs but was only discovered after the game ended. Given all the players ahead of him on the depth chart, this injury will likely end Watkins' long-shot bid at securing a spot on the 49ers' 53-man roster.
