Watkins caught seven of 14 targets for a team-high 139 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's preseason game against the Eagles.
Watkins, a free agent added to the preseason roster days before the Browns set out for the Greenbriar to open training camp, has been the team's best receiver through three preseason games (including the Hall of Fame Game). The former USFL pass catcher has significantly outplayed both David Bell and Anthony Schwartz -- both draft picks -- and is getting reps with injuries to Marquise Goodwin (illness), Elijah Moore (ribs) and Jaelon Darden (leg). Added to that list is Jakeem Grant, who has yet to play in a game as he's being brought back slowly from an Achilles injury. There's still some time left in camp for roster tinkering, but Watkins' turn as the preseason star among the wideout group has improved his chances.

Watkins, who had a touchdown catch in last week's Hall of Fame Game, has made a quick impression after signing with the Browns just before the start of training camp. He was not on the field with starting quarterback Deshaun Watson, and he's competing with several receivers for a longshot bid to make the roster. Browns' Austin Watkins: Signs with Cleveland
Watkins and the Browns agreed on a contract Friday, Brad Stainbrook of 247Sports.com reports.
Watkins will join Cleveland ahead of their upcoming training camp after spending the 2022 campaign as a free agent. The wide receiver has yet to make his NFL debut after a collegiate career at UAB and he'll look to at least crack the Browns' practice squad ahead of the 2023 season.

Watkins was cut from Tampa Bay's roster to help get the team under the 90-player limit after he signed a reserve/future contract on Jan. 31. Watkins started the season on the 49ers' injured reserve and was later released with an injury settlement. The receiver then had a workout with the Bengals in October but he didn't end up joining Cincinnati. Now back with the 49ers, Watkins will fall back into his depth role at wide receiver.

Watkins broke his foot in Saturday's preseason opener and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks, NIck Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
The injury is believed to have happened early in the game against the Chiefs but was only discovered after the game ended. Given all the players ahead of him on the depth chart, this injury will likely end Watkins' long-shot bid at securing a spot on the 49ers' 53-man roster.
