  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Set to miss two weeks

Surtain (ankle) is expected to miss "about two weeks," Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports. It was reported earlier Monday that Surtain was expected to miss time with the ankle injury he sustained in Sunday's loss to the 49ers, and it appears he will sit out at least a couple games. However, Surtain does not appear to be facing an extended absence, and he could be back on the field before October comes to a close.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Likely to miss time with ankle injury

Surtain (ankle) will undergo an MRI on Monday, and while the cornerback is believed to have avoid a season-ending injury, he's expected to miss time, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Surtain exited in the second half of Sunday's 24-14 loss to the 49ers after going down with the ankle injury on what appeared to be a non-contact play. Fortunately for the three-time Pro Bowler, Surtain appears to have avoided a worst-case scenario after his Achilles was deemed to be fully intact, but he'll most likely be sidelined for a Week 5 game against the Chargers. Rapoport notes that a stint on injured reserve could also be on the table for Surtain, though the Broncos will wait and see what his MRI reveals before providing a clearer timeline for his return.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Won't return Sunday

Surtain (ankle) won't return to Sunday's game against San Francisco, Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette reports. Surtain suffered a non-contact injury in the first half and needed assistance off the field. He was initially listed as questionable to return, though most had assumed at that point he wouldn't be back on the field again in Week 4. With Riley Moss (ribs) also ruled out, Kris Abrams-Draine and Jahdae Barron will need to step up the rest of the way.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Questionable to return versus 49ers

Surtain (ankle) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the 49ers, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports. Surtain suffered a non-contact injury before the end of the first half. He required assistance off the field, though there haven't been any updates since his departure. In the meantime, Jahdae Barron should see more action.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Exits Sunday's game against 49ers

Surtain (knee) exited Sunday's game against the 49ers, James Palmer of Bleacher Report reports Surtain suffered a non-contact injury shortly before the end of the first half. While he was able to stand, he needed assistance off the field. For now, the multi-time Pro Bowler should be considered questionable to return. In the meantime, Jahdae Barron is in line for more work.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Negotiates contract adjustment

Denver agreed Tuesday to give Surtain a $5 million raise with an additional $5 million incentive for a Pro Bowl or All-Pro selection in 2026, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Surtain is now officially in the first year of the four-year, $96 million contract extension he signed with the Broncos back in September of 2024, so the pay bump is not a huge change. The incentive doesn't appear to be a difficult one for the cornerback to reach, as he's already made four straight Pro Bowls. If Denver is able to again field one of football's top defenses in 2026, Surtain will probably be one of the biggest reasons why.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Another impressive year in 2025

Surtain finished the 2025 regular season with 47 tackles (37 solo) and 12 passes defensed, including one interception, across 14 regular-season games. Surtain had another strong season in 2025, although his one interception tied a career low for the veteran cornerback. The 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year produced similar numbers last season, but the decrease in interceptions is not the product of diminished skill. Instead, opposing quarterbacks avoided targeting him based on his abilities as a shutdown corner. In addition, the 25-year-old missed three games in the middle of the season due to a pectoral injury. Surtain is under contract with the Broncos through the 2029 season, so he'll continue to be one of the best defenders on a formidable defense for the foreseeable future.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Ready for Week 13

Surtain (pectoral) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Commanders. Surtain capped off the week with full practices Thursday and Friday and is ready to go for Sunday night's primetime matchup with the Commanders. The outside cornerback missed just one defensive snap in eight weeks of play before his early exit versus the Cowboys in Week 8. The return of the star will bolster an already strong Broncos defense as they attempt to secure a high seed in the AFC.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Upgrades to full practice Thursday

Surtain (pectoral) was a full participant at practice Thursday. Surtain has missed the Broncos' last three games due to a pectoral injury. Coming off a bye, the cornerback was able to practice in a limited capacity Wednesday, and an upgrade to full participation Thursday bodes well for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year's chances to play in Sunday night's game against the Commanders.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Won't play vs. Chiefs

Surtain (pectoral) is officially listed as out for Sunday's game versus Kansas City. Surtain will miss a third straight contest with a pectoral strain he suffered in Week 8 versus the Cowboys. Without him, Denver will probably have to lean more heavily on 2024 fifth-rounder Kris Abrams-Draine for corner reps on the boundary in Week 11.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Still missing practice with pec

Surtain (pectoral) did not participate at practice Wednesday. Surtain has been sidelined for Denver's last two games because of a pectoral strain he suffered in Week 8 versus the Cowboys, and now his status for Week 11 is in doubt. To give himself a realistic chance to play Sunday versus the Chiefs, he'll probably need to return to practice in some capacity Thursday or Friday.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Ruled out ahead of Week 10

Surtain (pectoral) was ruled out ahead of Thursday's matchup against the Raiders. Surtain was listed as a non-participant for every practice session this week. He'll be in line for his second straight absence, and it's not clear when he will able to return. Riley Moss and Kris Abrams-Draine will take on more responsibility in the secondary.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Won't play Week 9 as expected

Surtain (pectoral) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Texans. The All-Pro corner sustained a pectoral injury during the Broncos' Week 8 win over the Cowboys, which carries a four-to-six week recovery timeline. Luca Evans of The Denver Post reported Wednesday that the Broncos aren't planning to place Surtain on injured reserve at this time in the hopes that he'll be available to return following the Week 12 bye. Ja'Quan McMillian appears to be the top candidate to start at outside corner opposite Riley Moss in Surtain's absence, which gives Kris Abrams-Draine and rookie first-rounder Jahdae Barron the opportunity for an increased role at the slot corner position.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Could be headed for IR stint

Surtain could land on injured reserve after he suffered a pectoral strain in the team's 44-24 win over the Cowboys on Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Surtain sustained the injury in the first half of the contest, ultimately not returning to action following the break. The cornerback will not need to undergo surgery, but he's expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks while recovering from the injury, per NFL reporter Jordan Schultz. Surtain is set to get a second opinion on the injury in the near future, but at minimum, he can be considered week-to-week for the time being.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Exits with lower leg injury

Surtain (lower leg) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Cowboys, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports. Surtain sustained the injury in the first quarter while breaking up a pass attempt from Dak Prescott to George Pickens. Kris Abrams-Draine is in line for more snaps at outside corner for as long as Surtain is on the sidelines being evaluated by medical staff.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Wins Defensive Player of the Year

Surtain was named the 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year on Thursday, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports. Surtain became the first cornerback to win DPOY since Stephon Gilmore in 2019, while the former was just the second Bronco all-time to win the award after linebacker Randy Gradishar did so in 1978. Surtain appeared in 16 regular-season games in 2024, recording 45 total tackles (34 solo), 11 passes defensed, including four interceptions, one of which he returned for a 100-yard pick-six in Week 5 versus the Raiders. The cornerback also added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery during the season.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Dealing with minor ankle sprain

Surtain sustained a sprained ankle during Sunday's game versus the Colts, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. The injury is not believed to be severe, leaving open the possibility Surtain will be able to play Thursday against the Chargers. His name will be one to watch for when the Broncos release their official injury reports in the days leading up to that contest.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Intercepts pass in win

Surtain recorded a tackle for a loss, a pass defensed and an interception in Sunday's 28-14 win over the Panthers. The cornerback suffered a concussion during Denver's Week 6 loss to the Chargers and missed the team's Week 7 win over the Saints, but he cleared the concussion protocol in time for this game. Surtain has played on at least 80 percent of the defensive snaps in all of the games he's been fully available to play in this season. The fourth-year pro has 15 tackles (nine solo), six pass breakups and three interceptions in 2024.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Clears concussion protocol

Surtain (concussion) carries no injury designation into Sunday's game against Carolina, Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post reports. Surtain was a full participant in all three practices this week and cleared the final step of the concussion protocol by gaining clearance from an independent neurologist. The star cornerback had logged 14 tackles (eight solo) and five defensed passes -- including two interceptions (one of which was returned for a touchdown) -- across six outing before he was sidelined with the concussion in the Week 7 win over the Saints.

  • Broncos' Patrick Surtain: Won't play in Week 7

Surtain (concussion) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Saints, Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post reports. Surtain was unable to practice in any fashion this week after sustaining a concussion in Sunday's loss to the Broncos. With the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback set to miss his first game of the season, Levi Wallace and Ja'Quan McMillian could be in store for increased reps out of the Denver secondary.
