  • 49ers' James Thompson: Cleared for Week 6

Thompson (ankle) doesn't carry an injury designation into Monday night's game against the Commanders. Thompson hasn't played since Week 2 against the Dolphins after playing 35 percent of the defensive snaps across the first two weeks of the season. He'll slide back into his depth role along the defensive line before Osa Odighizuwa and Naquan Jones.

  • 49ers' James Thompson: Approaching return to action

Thompson (ankle) could return to action in Week 6 against Washington, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. Thompson has been sidelined since suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 2 against Miami, but head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that the defensive lineman has "a chance" to play in the team's Week 6 matchup against the Commanders on Monday Night Football. Thompson has registered four total tackles (one solo) over two games this season.

  • 49ers' James Thompson: Expects to be out again at Seattle

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Thompson (ankle) is not expected back for Week 5, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Thompson has already missed the 49ers' last two games with an ankle injury he picked up in Week 2 versus the Dolphins, and it seems like he's trending towards missing another contest come Sunday. In that case, Sebastian Valdez would be a candidate for increased snaps on the defensive line.

  • 49ers' James Thompson: Likely to miss action moving forward

Thompson suffered a high-ankle sprain during Sunday's 35-13 win over Miami, David Lombardi of SFStandard.com reports. Thompson sustained the injury in the second half of the victory, and he will now likely be forced to miss some time moving forward. In his absence, the 49ers will have to add another interior defensive lineman to their active roster.

  • 49ers' James Thompson: Dealing with ankle injury

Thompson (ankle) is questionable to return to Sunday's contest against Miami, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Thompson was slow to get up before ultimately going to the locker room in the second half. His status for the rest of the game is now in the air, but his absence won't have a major impact on the team's defensive approach.
