49ers' James Thompson: Won't play against Seattle
Thompson (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Seahawks.
As expected, Thompson will miss a third consecutive game due to an ankle injury. He didn't practice once during Week 5 prep, so he'll need to return to the field to have a realistic shot of being available for Week 6 against the Commanders on Monday, Oct. 19. Naquan Jones and Sebastian Valdez will both see an uptick in rotational snaps at defensive tackle behind Osa Odighizuwa and Gracen Halton.

49ers' James Thompson: Expects to be out again at Seattle
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Thompson (ankle) is not expected back for Week 5, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Thompson has already missed the 49ers' last two games with an ankle injury he picked up in Week 2 versus the Dolphins, and it seems like he's trending towards missing another contest come Sunday. In that case, Sebastian Valdez would be a candidate for increased snaps on the defensive line.

Thompson (ankle) won't play in San Francisco's Week 4 matchup versus the Broncos, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Thompson is in line to miss a second consecutive game due to the high-ankle sprain he suffered during the Week 2 win over the Dolphins. While there's currently no timetable for his return, his next chance to play will be the Week 6 matchup against Seattle.

49ers' James Thompson: Sidelined versus Arizona
Thompson (ankle) is listed as out for Sunday's game against Arizona.
Thompson suffered a high-ankle sprain in the 35-13 victory over the Dolphins in Week 2. While nothing has been made official, an injury of this nature likely means he will miss more time moving ahead. The rookie appeared in both of the 49ers' games to begin the 2026 campaign, amassing four total tackles (one solo).

49ers' James Thompson: Dealing with ankle injury
Thompson (ankle) is questionable to return to Sunday's contest against Miami, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Thompson was slow to get up before ultimately going to the locker room in the second half. His status for the rest of the game is now in the air, but his absence won't have a major impact on the team's defensive approach.
